I have a 73 fj40 rebuild project and have been posting my progress on “She’s Home Again”. I got the V8 back from the shop minus front engine mounts and have been on the hunt. I took measurements and found out I, during the initial swap years ago, used a Downey engine mount for the front of the engine:

I used the original Toyota front engine mounts and still have them installed. Here’s the question: can these still be found or should I scrap this approach and go with the readily available side mounts? Is there safety concerns or faulty design to the Downey front mounts?

What other mounts do you plan to use on the rest of the engine / transmission ?

I would rather have the mounts on the side of the engine.

the further the mounts are away from each other the more force will be put on them during frame twist off-road.

I use that rear prop mount with the centre mounts on the engine block. I don’t really like that prop mount either but it’s my only option for my transmission.

I'd scrap that Downey mount and use the AA type mounts that use the actual blocks motor mounts bosses. The downey mount will limit you from working on the frt of the engine, like replacing a timing chain, it may also interfere with mounting accessories like power steering pump and alternators and such. The beauty of the sbc is how easy they are to work on and that contraption will really complicate things.

I'd contact Georg at Valley Hybrids/Cruiser Brothers and ask about his tcase savers & about which mount he prefers, he will know the pros & cons of the Downey unit and may have one. He also may have other mount options

Just a little FYI information. Prior to 1958 all SBC's used the front of the block mounting holes. 1958 was the first year to add the side motor mount bosses and also kept the front mounting holes into the 1970's.

If I remember correctly from other threads, Jim advised not to use 3 sets of engine, transmission, transfer case mounts.

If you go with the side block mounts you'll have to remove the original bellhousing mounts.
