Hey All

I kind of remember reading a thread here on upgraded, beefier, and more engaging CV clamps.

I’m having trouble finding it now.

Can anyone provide some insight?

Thanks

You may be thinking of these? They work on a 100 series, I assume 200 as well.

McMaster Carr
#5574K25 (4-4 3/4")
#5574K16 (1-1 5/8")

Two of each for both sides.

Lots of info on MUD id you search those part numbers.

I may have a couple extra if you need some

Perfect!

Exactly what I was looking for.

Thank you sir

Genuine question why would you want beefier cv clamps? I do not offroad my LX so I am assuming it has something to do with that.

Valid question...

For me, anytime i touch something related to maintenance or replacing, i look to put in the best option available.

"Ounce of prevention saves a pound of headache"

My 200 has 215K on it, with original CVs.

I am doing a total refresh of the entire suspension system and replacing every single thing on it that involves rubber, or a bushing.

The CVs are a "while i am in there" type of thing, Since the entire front end will be taken apart, its almost silly not to either replace them, or reboot them.

I am looking at all options. Ive seen a few folks mention here that they got brand new CVs and had slightly loose clamps and caused leaks.

Long story short, i am looking at the best way to bulletproof this (reliability wise) for long term use, nothing extreme though

I also prefer the idea of clamps that are easily worked on, or replaced with simple tools, and not need special clamp pliers to install

You don't need these clamps unless your CVs are leaking grease at the clamp. The OEM clamps are great if the right tool is used to clamp them properly. The McMaster ones are better than other clamps are the edges are rounded and less likely to cause the boot to tear over time, but worm drive clamps inherently can loosen at the screw and are more likely to leak grease over time, plus the drive screw is larger and weighs more than the OEM clamp and can add marginally more vibration to your driveline. Plus there's a very small chance the larger drive screw could make contact with something depending on its position.

Now if you are leaking grease at the clamp then this is the easy way to fix them without removing the CV. If you really want a set, I think I have them in my garage that I can send you for the cost of shipping.

Hey Geoff, I ended up going with the worm drive clamps when I had to replace a torn CV boot on my 200. Since then one of them has disappeared and I’ve been fighting with other options. Do you know the McMaster-Carr part# for the inner/outer clamps? I’d like to order some of those as I’ll have some friends traveling to Angola from the USA in October.

See post #2 above for the part #s (I believe). smaller size is the shaft (inner part of the boot), larger size is the outside of the boot

I'm not sure why nobody has designed a constant tension clamp, specifically for CV use (low profile, lightweight and balanced).

Thanks All

I remember reading here that a couple folks got new OEM CVs had some boot leaks brand new out of the box.

My plan when I redo the front end was to keep what’s in there in place, but changed my mind and will be just putting in new OEM units due to 215k, for peace of mind more than much else “while I’m in there”

Was going to have new clamps on standby in case new ones come and don’t look right and proper.

May all be worrying over nothing, but I have a small window where I can use a lift for the suspension refresh and it’s one of those would rather have and not need scenarios

Thanks

I was one of those people who had the new CV boot kit and clamps, clamped it all up, but had some grease weeping out of the large clamp part of the CV boot. Ended up going with the worm drive clamps, and they’ve worked to a degree. However, there is only a few mm of clearance between the worm drive and some other metal parts that would knock the clamp loose or off all together.
