Update the Head unit in a 1999 LC100? (1 Viewer)

There's quite a few options, I have a JVC w/Apple Car Play in my '99 that was basically plug & play with a harness I got from Crutchfield. Easy install and perfect fit in the original double-DIN. So good that I want to get another one for my other 100 (damn you, Two Project decision....!) :)

Thank you, *Exiled! Can you provide a model number for the JVC unit and the Crutchfield harness?

The JVS model is KW-M560BT and the harness is a Metra 70-8112 (1992-00 Toyota Lexus Amplifier Integration). www.metraonline.com

Aftermarket 2DIN radios will bolt into the early/non nav 100's without a problem by moving the factory radio brackets to the aftermarket radio.

However, most 100's will experience an obnoxious "buzz" using the plug-in-play Metra 70-8112 harness and factory amplifier. This is a well documented issue on the forum. The way to fix this is by doing an amp bypass (which is definitely not plug and play) but is also well documented on the forum.

Good point! I haven't had any buzzing on mine, so maybe I got lucky, but I have seen it (heard it?) on a couple of LCs.

I went with a Sony double din apple/Android auto Head unit and also installed a backup camera and replaced the factory cigarette lighter with a USB port for the unit while I was in there.

I'm very happy with the unit.

Unfortunately, the PO for my LC hard wired a marine unit into the factory harness so install was a bit more complicated than I needed to be.

Crutchfield has plug and play harnesses to use with or without the factory sub. Just give them a call and tell them what you need.

Best thread on how to bypass the stock amp?
Stereo Wiring: Land Cruiser / LX 470 (1998-02) - https://tlcfaq.com/main/2012/05/land-cruiser-lx-470-stereo-wiring/ <- This is the guide I used almost 9 years ago to bypass the amp in my 99

Is the a plug and play option for replacing/updating the original stereo head unit?
If you don't have navigation / integrated climate control you have all sorts of options.

The crew at Crutchield is helpful, give them a call or online chat for some options. Beware of the never ending up-sell that they try to do but otherwise they have some good info + how-to install documents.

I have the benefit of living 20 minutes from the crutchfield hq. I walked in a left a few minutes later with a box full of gadgets, and a whole lot less money.

I only hear buzzing when I turn the head unit off, and it's quite loud. The other very small problem I've had is the antenna stalk never goes all the way down when the head unit is on, no matter what I try it pops up ~3". Not a problem unless I'm driving through thick brush, or going through a car wash. Then I have to turn it off and deal with the buzz. Neither issue is enough for me to regret doing the easy install for an aftermarket head unit.

I believe the antenna up those few inches is a factory setting. My system is 100% stock and does the same thing when the head unit is on and drops to full rest when off.

I've been struggling to find a quality wireless carplay head unit with a volume knob. Already had an aftermarket head unit from the PO and it looks like they did the wiring properly so im hoping itll be an easy swap.

As noted, any double din unit will work well.

The other option to avoid the bypass wiring is just to take the next step and wire in a new aftermarket amp and speakers. Doesn’t take much to really have a system that sounds 10x better than stock… not important to some, but just mentioning the price of amps and speakers are way lower than where they were not too many years ago.

What amp would you recommend to drive 4 speakers + sub (stock ones). Ideally so all factory wiring can be reused (power too)

I went with this little guy. It fits perfectly under the passenger seat. It drives 6 speakers and a 12" sub.

Soundstream PN5.640D Picasso Nano 640 W 5-Channel Class D Digital Car Audio Amplifier

So you’re likely looking for a 5-channel. I’d call crutchfield and see what they say. Amps live, often, for years and years, so used is always an option. You want to pay attention to the wire size recommended. I went with eBay JBL 8 channel that is tiny. It was like $250 refurbished.
