I’ll be dumping the oil on a 7K mile interval (60-67K miles) on Mobile 1 full synthetic 5w-30 here in a few weeks and I plan to send it off to Blackstone for analysis. I’ll post up the results when I get them back. I’ll be moving to 5K mile intervals from here forward.

I’ll dump my Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0w/20 when we return from MT (5k OCI) in a week and have it tested and post the results. I may go with 0w/30 full synthetic at that time to do a comparison and oil analysis then.

I’ll be at 50k when we return and it won’t take long to hit 55k as we are heading to Big Bend and Santa Fe after.

I run an AEM Dryflow filter w/snorkel (and removable pre filter sock for dusty roads).

Would be great if we could build a database.

Why an AEM filter over OEM? I would bet money OEM is better.

Reusable and much better synthetic media and deeper pleats than an oiled K&N.

I don’t base my decisions on bets and conjecture. Until I see empiric data indicating otherwise, I feel comfortable which is subjective. I’ve been running AEMs for years and have them in each of my family vehicles for which there is an application.

My AEM seals better in my air box and the gasket is thicker and seems higher quality than OEM. Combined with my Safari snorkel and synthetic pre-filter sock—I’m good to go. I replied to another post saying that the variable of where you live, maintenance, etc., may play a bigger factor. So many variables.

Genuine Toyota = $21, AEM = $70. At the recommended interval plus the original this would bring you to 150k miles before costing more than the AEM. All while getting better filtration.

More pleats than Genuine Toyota?

The gasket does seem to be an issue on the original filter, but that's addressable. Oiled gauze not being capable of filtering fine dust is not, in the places that have it.

I'm curious what the silicon numbers will be.

Synthetic DryFlow media. Thicker gasket for air box seal. Not a performance filter. Not an oiled cotton gauze filter.

  • 4,500 mile 0w-20 Blackstone Report should be received this week
  • 5,000 mile 0w-20 w/ 1qt Marvel Mytery Oil swapped in @ 4,500 miles being mailed to Blackstone today
  • Changed to 5w-30 yesterday. Will run for 5,000 miles & send to Blackstone so we have a back-to-back-to-back 0w-20, 0w-20 w/ additive, & 5w-30 results on same engine

I'd feel a lot better about your test if you added a "flush" 500 mile oil change after dumping the Marvel Mystery Oil:

  • Changed to 5w-30 yesterday. Will run for 500 miles and dump (optionally you could send this to Blackstone just to see how much damage the MMO did)
  • 5,000 mile 5w-30 will send to Blackstone& send to Blackstone
  • So we will have a back-to-back-to-back-to-back 0w-20, 0w-20 w/ additive, 5w-30 w/ residualk additive & 5w-30 results on same engine
Just a suggestion since I can only imagine how much the residual Marvel Mystery Oil will screw up the comparison.

HTH

If someone wants to Venmo me $85 ($35 Blackstone + $40 2 x 5-gallon jugs + $10 filter) to perform the 500 mile flush, I'm happy to do so.

Otherwise, I'm feeling pretty good about my contribution & posting what will be 3 Blackstone analysis for the good of the I8MUD forum.

Nice!

Anyone have trouble getting a good dipstick read after switch to 5/w30? Even with taking dipstick out, cleaning, leaving out overnight- when I insert for a fresh read next morning, I look 1/2 qt high on one side and barely registering at bottom below reading zone on other side. I tried scuffing up the reading zone - still no dice. Should I go with low reading & add more? I did a full drain when doing this switch and added back same/greater amount than I normally would (Ive done all of my fluid changes ongoing - just switched to 5w30 last week). Thanks

7.9 quarts is what it needs. No issues with numerous oil changes on mine with 5w-30 and I am about to change it again next week.
