toylndcrusr- I don't meant to sound flippant, but it seems to me that the engineers who designed that feature would know a little better about the issue than someone randomly weldong a collar over a seam. Also, keep in mind that not everything a vehicle comes into contact with during an accident has a crumple zone- for example: in Scott's accident, that construction crane did not have one. If you hit a tree, it will not have one, etc, etc.

Scott, has your crash had a similar influence on the way you look at the strength and safety of your truck?
Not really, I'm more sold than ever on the safety of our trucks.

There was a post long ago when one of ours was hit from behind by (I think) an Excursion at highway speed. The 80 was badly damaged, but both occupants were ok and the 80 was driveable. I'd say that and my accident are testimony that these things are more than adequate protection from almost anything we'll face. Click and Clack voted the 80 "Vehicle I'd most want to be in if Martians attacked the earth". It's plenty sturdy as is.

Welding a collar over that weld will move the stresses to new points on the structure, as it can no longer flex as intended. The new points may be less capable of withstanding stress, fail earlier. The ARB was outside the structure, so I think it adds strength without changing the ultimate stresses and failure modes within the structure.

I work for an airline as well, the airline that enables you to Feel Free to move about the Country.

Thanks all! I'm not in the air yet, but a month or so of re-training should be adequate. Lots and lots to memorize.

Doug sent me the pics long ago in a format I couldn't open, so I've never seen most of them. Maybe he'll post something.

Obviously an old thread, but those are some impressive pictures. I wish the others worked. While most of the thanks is due to the grace of God, it sure speaks well to the safety of the FJ80. Enough so that you may have sold me on replacing my wife's Mazda MPV with one.

Scott, I picked up that you departed the road at 60 MPH+ and hit the crane. But what caused the accident?

dunno. 3am or so in sleet/slush. I remember deciding not to stop in Michigan City and ride the bus into O'Hare because I was feeling awake and rested. There was a lot of construction going on, and the heavy truck traffic at that time of night had pushed me off onto the shoulder many times before. I tend not to stab the brakes when I get pushed off, don't know if there was a shoulder or just gravel in that construction, dunno. I think I'd trust the brakes and stability control of the 100 more in a situation like that.

I wasn't aware that weather played a part, that makes more sense.

wow I just saw this thread, that crane must have been pretty substantial. Im glad you made it out OK.

Doug,

Can you fix the pictures? They aren't working.

Thanks,
Dave

Doug's post. #22 it used to have pics.

Wow. Thankful.

Anyone have an idea of the relative crash-worthy-ness of later models, like the 100 and up? My 93 does not have airbags, and that is a worry.

1993 LC, 233+K miles, drives like a new one, almost.

I just stumbled upon this, funny as I'm at 32,000' in the skys.

WOW. WOW. WOW. Do you think the Arb contributed to saving your life. Simply amazing. I've seen pictures of wrecked 80's and 80's in real life that rear ended other cars with no arb... they are tough. BUT I've never seen the carnage that this shows. Glad you made it out.

I hope you are O K ! It's been 43 years and the reverberations from the horrific Impact continue to this day. All things changed after that, I hope you are O K ?

I have been a paramedic for over 20 years, and in that time seen a lot of accidents from mild to horrific, literally hundreds, and most high speed. Cruiser or not you are crazy lucky. That type of damage to an 80, you should be dead, and would be in anything else. Go buy a lottery ticket
