Hi all,

I have a 72 FJ40 and I was wondering what people have done to put the gas tank under the bed instead of under the passenger seat.

Any suggestions are welcome! Pictures please!

Thanks!

Eric

Could try a search on auxillary tanks for ideas on how people are mounting tanks back there. Later 40s (80 and up I believe) had them there as well so could take a look and get a tank from one. I'm sinking a fuel cell about 4 inches into the floor to keep exposure to rocks a minimum while allowing for interior space.

Many use a rear auxiliary tank, 22 gal, mounts behind rear diff. Search around this forum for new or used sources.

heres the one i got. its from man a fre. its the one jim is talking about

what's wrong with where it's located now?

try search, this has definately been discussed a few times in the last year.

Under my seats is where I like to keep my tow strap, jackets, etc.
Plus us tall guys like to sit lower than the top of the interior tank!!!

I have a bucket seat as the front drivers seat but i'd like to put one in the passenger side too and the gas tank is a bit high to do so.

GarageRat brings up a good point about rock protection... is that one likely to hit the rocks because it is under the bed?

Thanks

My Confer had a skid plate to protect it. I almost never drug it going off of ledges and stuff.

Can I get pictures of waht you guys have rigged up?

Will I be able to install one without taking off the body?

yes you can install it without taking the body off. i took the one under the seat out because i wanted to lower the seats also. worked just fine the only thing is with the v8 my driving range is not that great oh well

OK it was my old CJ5 but I had 1/4 flat stock as a skid plate for my under the body of the fuel tank, behind the axle gas tank. I had 4"s of lift and 35s. All it took was one pointy rock on the Con and there went my fuel. Luckily I had potatoes in my cooler for dinner and used one to plug the tank.

If I was to put a tank in the rear, I would cut out the rear deck and mount a tank half in/ half under the rig and build a new rear deck. I would use a simple Jegs Fuel Cell with the foam inside and vent it outside the cab.
