For Sale Unbelievable OEM SoftTop Fj40 on Ebay

Also, I would think that the oem vinyl top, in mint condition like this would be worth thousands of dollars alone (assuming you are able to be patient for the, 'right' buyer). It is the only one I have ever seen that was really mint, & actually for sale. If a collector were wanting to do a true, councours resto (not a resto mod, lifted etc..) of an oem soft top 40, the top & original top parts/doors, original to that specific vehicle & mint, this would be one of the very few 40's that I have seen come along to qualify.

I believe Mark A. (65swb45) sold a brand new OEM vinyl top he picked up with a bunch of parts a few years back. It had never been installed. Not sure what he got for it but I believe it was under $3K. Based on what other FST cruisers have sold for it still far away from the $75K-$150K to claim in the auction. Then asking have you ever seen a tailgate? Those are all over on Mud. It really too bad Ground Up thread had all the pictures removed. It was truely amazing. All new bolts correct emission. CDan even commented how hard it was for him to find all the correct parts. His even had a restore OEM winch. I own a 73 soft top myself. Other than not having the OEM vinyl I have all the correct parts for a 73, some of which were 73 only. It's AZ that is only going to need two small rust repairs. Rear sill is intact. I have no dreams of making huge money on it. Because of what the prefect 73 sold for made me decide it wouldn't be worth all the effort to do a major restore.

Even though this 72 has a OEM vinyl top there are new tops being made all the time. If you wait OCD tops are very nice and now Badger in VT is talking about making them. Just like many other parts on these old FJ40s the hay day for selling rare parts for a fortune is going away. I've seen a stamped Land Cruiser bezel go for $600 on Ebay. Now for a couple hundred you can get a repo. A couple of different sources of replacement bows is bringing down the price what you can get for OEM bows. Buy a new Icon for a $100K plus and try and resell a few years later. TLC is the only who makes big money. Look at Allen Jackson's old LV that just had a thread in the 40 section. It sold at Barrett Jackson a few years back. I the price was $77K and it was restored by TLC. I'm sure Allen Jackson paid more then that. I wish these old cruiser were worth a fortune since I have a bunch of them but there really aren"t. I'm lucky in at least I never over paid when I bought them.

i was hoping he would be able to post up pictures of that top.

I like this top...clean...and the top hasnt shrunk yet...whoever gets that top would need to reguarly use 303 aerospace protectant to prolong the shrinking...or keep it indoors :meh:

Kplords whats the botton line on the rig?

Many thanks to mudders who emplore wisdom in their comments without judgment. I appreciate your sound advice and your unsurpassed tlc knowledge, for I am humbled by your extensive knowledge and only hope to be as wise as some of you, some day. Thank you. A great big thanks to gr8ful for what seems to be the only one really continuously speaking in a postive manner.

My bottom line? I currently have two standing offers on the table for the entire vinly soft-top, soft-doors, bows, door harware, ...the whole kit and kaboodle so to speak for $8k. It seems that there are more than one of you interested in getting your hands on this top and making a go of manufacturing tops in the good 'ol USA for Sale. My eBay Reserve is not much higher than that.

Many thanks to those that deserve it. Cheers!

BTW, my claims of "priceless" and the 75-150k 'guess,' are solely my opinon, not claims of actual value of a restored '72 FST. If I wasn't in serious financial trouble because of medical reasons and unemployement, I WOULD NEVER SELL THIS RIG!

I truly LOVE IT. Every time I even sit in it, I get the biggest grin from ear to ear. :D:D Driving it, is an entirely a whole different story. I will miss it terribly.:frown: But, it is what it is, and you have to do what you have to do.

I'll still have my piggy and the '85. Take Care All. Cheers.

bottom line

Take the standing offer, seems fair & in the price range it should be. GLWS!

So, two people offered you $8K for the complete soft top, bows and hardware, not including the truck?

?

Johnny, before I sold the NOS top I took it over to SOR, where they VERY CAREFULLY measured every aspect of the top. It is my understanding that from that time forward their repro tops were reconfigured to incorporate the measurements they got from the NOS top I brought it.

So logically, anyone interested in producing an OE top would only need to pay SOR's price for their replacement top, reverse engineer it, then resell it and move along with their project with only a fraction of the commitment it would take to buy this top.

Best

Mark A.
