Correct me if I'm wrong, but the only thing I see on the truck that's rare is the top. A '72 isn't rare at all. The truck has gaping rust holes too. Am I missing something?

Have you ever seen a '72 with a drop-down tail gate? No, swing-out tail gates. Drop-down tail gates were only available on a factory soft-top until the switch in '75.

Anyone can 'build' a soft-top 40. That one is a toyota soft-top that has survived. It's plenty rare.

btw, Ehsan is a doctor.

Soft top models were avaiable here until the 76 which which was went Toyota stopped importing them to the US. Currently have six factory soft tops myself. Most are pre 64 with the even rarer front door opening. One has the barn door which is even rarer to find on factory soft top. Still plenty of factory soft top models floating around. The best part of this 72 is the vinyl top itself. The rest needs to be restore. If you really want to make some money on this cruiser remove the vinyl top, store it away then restore the rest of the cruiser. After that you will probably get the money your hoping to get now.

Could this possibly be the seller?

By doctor do you mean X-ray technician? Because that's what he is.

Was thinking the same thing.

If he's never seen a drop down tailgate, then he needs to look at more pictures. They're all over this site.

1972 FST FJ40 with inflated ego...the guy selling it has his head in the clouds....

"This Original fj40 Factory Soft-Top could be put on display as is in a Collection or even a Museum! With a small investment in a restoration this fj40 is priceless, can you put a value on it? 75-150k minimum I would guess??"

Like 'Living in the Past' said, the oem vinyl soft top is the only thing worth real money, the rig itself...:meh:

Okay, so am I right in saying that this '72 isn't that rare after all?
Just doesn't seem as rare as the seller claims.

I wish him luck. I got $7.5k for my super duper, ultra rare '78 factory soft top about 7 years ago. I doubt they have appreciated 10 fold since then. Dream on.......lol

Here is a thread about another soft top on Ebay a while back. https://forum.ih8mud.com/vehicles-trailers-sale-wanted/521025-1972-fj40-factory-soft-top.html Looks a little rougher but not much. Only difference is the OEM vinyl top which is worth more but not a ton more. Reading the auction is appears the seller is out of work and the reason for selling. So I guess restoring is not a option. There was a guy who went by Ground Up on here a few years back who did a amazing job of restoring a 73 soft top. It took a few times on Ebay to sell and then only for $22K fullly restored. While the top was not original it was very high quality canvas top . I contacted Rick_D in hopes of getting another. But only a few were done and the company wasn't willing to do anymore. I could find the thread on the restore but all the pictures were removed:frown: It was red with a tan top and a few pictures of it are still floating around mud.

A link to the Ground Up thread https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/52396-1973-restoration.html

I'm posting a couple of pictures of the other 72 because I'm sure the auction info will be deleted by Ebay pretty soon. It sold off of Ebay but I don't believe it went for higher than the starting bid of $4,500.

I guess if one was restoring a 40 and wanted a oem top , assuming its cherry and has lots of cash, lol, who knows

By doctor do you mean X-ray technician? Because that's what he is.

Back in the days of the LCML (Prior to Ih8mud), when Eshan first introduced himself & started pursuing the soft top & other Cruiser part business, he introduced himself as a Doctor, and claimed that he worked something like 80-90 hours a week at it, and only did the cruiser thing as a hobby, as his pasion.

So I always thought he was a doctor. Perhaps it was a language barrier issue, or perhaps he intentionally exagerated to try & gain a bit of extra, "Bona Fides" quickly. It wouldn't be that hard to stretch a job description in that scenario.

Also, I would think that the oem vinyl top, in mint condition like this would be worth thousands of dollars alone (assuming you are able to be patient for the, 'right' buyer). It is the only one I have ever seen that was really mint, & actually for sale. If a collector were wanting to do a true, councours resto (not a resto mod, lifted etc..) of an oem soft top 40, the top & original top parts/doors, original to that specific vehicle & mint, this would be one of the very few 40's that I have seen come along to qualify.
Best,
Abe
