Need some help!

I'm in the process of installing ventilation baffles in my attic preparing for insulation. My question is two fold...

1st- my attic has old insulation over the living space but nothing over the carport. Should I put insulation over the car port?

2nd- I'm going to use the blown in stuff from lowes so ill have control over the r value. I'm wondering if I can add too much insulation? Our area doesn't get super cold but I guess more is better.

Thanks got any help

1. If garage is not heated space then i would not do it.
2. R40 is the standard most companies install inside attics.

I think r40 is like 14 inches.

Thanks. My wife was under the impression it needed to be insulated to stop any drafts from the carport.

Wall btw carport and living space of house should be insulated. Then when done overhead to that wall it seals the deal. Don't forget the floor needs good insulation as well. If there is little to no insulation present now you can also buy some foam in a can and seal any penetrations into floor and ceiling like wiring etc. Back years ago i worked for a outfit spraying cellulose insulation into houses.

I'm sealing every big space I find in the attic with foam. So far I've used it around two pipes that exit out the roof and around the pull down attic door. The house is brick and built in the 60's so no idea what's insulated between carport and the house.

After this its on to the crawlspace

As cheap as the blown insulation is, I don't see why you wouldn't blow some insulation over the carport too. Especially if the attic space is one big open area with no partition between the main house and the carport. I don't think you want big differentials in temp if you can avoid it - to prevent moisture/ condensation build up.

DON'T DO THE GREEN FIBER FROM LOWES!! Hey Kevin, go to Home Depot and buy the pink blow in fiberglass insulation, the paper crap from lowes will only sink over time and will eventually attract bugs and plus they say its treated to not burn, but it's paper. I installed some fiberglass this past spring and it made a huge difference this summer. The other nice thing about the fiberglass is if you ever need to get up in the attic and work you can simply rake it out of the way and rake it back when you are done. I have a low pitched roof so I have 2x6 joist which the old had settled to about the top of them, then I measured 12" from the top of the joist and made my mark, sprayed up to that and now I have 17" of insulation. You need 13" for and r-30 which is code. It would be a good idea to insulate the carport so if you ever decided to turn it into a garage then the ceiling would already be insulated. Plus all the new fiberglass insulation is now formaldehyde free so no more stinky odor or itchy skin. If you need anymore info just let me know, I sold insulation for a few years.

My wife just gave me the I told you do look, guess ill be doing it over the car port too. I never thought about enclosing it but that makes it easier if I ever do.

I will defiantly checkout home depot for the insulation. I only was looking at lowes because I was told if you buy so many bags of the green stuff the machine rental was free.

Kevin your HVAC isn't in your attic space is it?

I think the machine rental is free also at HD with bag purchase, you do have to put a 250 deposit down(this covers the deductible on the insurance they have on the machines) that way if you don't bring it back they can pay there deductible. But they give it back to you when u bring it back.

I had my insulation but rented the machine from HD, it cost me 50 bucks for 4 hours and it only took 2 hours to put it down, takes no time at all. There is a remote control on the hose, check to be sure the battery works, mine died half way through and presented a challenge to finish the job.

Thanks. It's a small attic, still have to calculate how many bags I will need. If its a minimum # of bags to get the free rental ill just take back what I don't use.

Nope it's in the crawlspace

Cool.... I personally wouldn't insulate the area over the carport except for a couple adjacent feet to you outermost interior wall. You won't see any benefits if you do as that exposed surface of the carport is no different than your exposed roof surface. If you want to do it just for kicks and you have money to "blow"...pun intended... go for it :D

But I am certainly no expert like Chuck

So how silly would a set of 30" bfgs look on my truck. 4 in spartanburg 60-70% left for 250...

Spotted--
I was coming down Poinsett hwy yesterday, and got in front of a completely Line X'd black and OD Green FJ Cruiser. Looked kinda like a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle mobile. Or at least that's what the GF called it. Looked pretty cool. Anyone know who it belongs to?

Used to be Red and then it was redone green. I see him everyonce in a while around greenville.

Ive seen the green and black one up and down Harrison Bridge in Simpsonville.
Just doesn't make sense to me to line the whole thing. (Of course the exception is if you have a steroided 60 and black it out with liner.)
But seriously, how much weight has he added in order to keep shopping buggies from putting a ding in the door.

Does Linux really add that much weight?? I was thinking about doing the bottom and flairs on mine
