A card carrying member the empirical school of engineering, I've seen some pretty big tire set ups with high-lift jacks and all sorts of other stuff hanging off the back of Kaymar tire carriers. So...trying to save rack space for a 3 week trip to Baja starting next week, I thought why not piggy back another spare on the tire carrier?

Stock rims with 33X10.5s, I cut out some 1/4" plate to fit the inside of the wheel. The outer face of stock rims have those "dimples" so you get this "hex" shape. The backside is no issue so a simpler shape.

A 9" long piece 2 1/2" tube was welded to the plates and gusseted. M12 X 150 X 40mm were tacked to the outer plate.

Images show piece work, the completed assembly loose and mounted. Final assembly worked pretty well. A bit of a cantilever, so some bounce, but no worse than a stock FJ40 tire carrier!

See how it all works...

looks like it worked out for you, how does the weight feel when you swing it out

WOW! I think that's the coooolest. I go to Baja all the time and have gone through many tires there, that setup may just save a trip to the llanteria. If you don't mind me asking, but where are you cruising through in Baja?

Not bad, I have buddies that have these cooler/tire carriers on their 40s. This isn't a fraction as heavy.

Don't know how well this will blow up, but here is trip map.

I hope your AC works good because the east cape gets disgustingly hot and humid. Aside from the heat looks like a great trip. Good luck and watch out for the big rigs, busses, and smart Americans riding bicycles on a two lane Highway.

Yea...been heading that direction for a bunch of years. Trip originally planned for the spring, but stuff came up. Not the best time of year, but better than not goin' at all!!!

Gotta agree about those trucks...

I hear ya, better than going to work. If you surf or boogieboard there should be some waves coming from way down south soon. Anyways, I'm a little jealous I cannot head down that way right now.:frown:

I like it! I don't have a kaymar bar but I made my own with a similar pivot to the Kaymar. I don't think that two spares on my carrier would be too much. Nice work.

Sherpa:

I didn't realize you are in Lafayette. I sent you an email.

long trip

from the looks of that map, looks like you will need acouple of spare tires alright. that is a cool idea you got there. i hope someday i could make a similar trip.just got back from a 7000 mile trip 2weeks ago,not in my cruiser unfortunately, via boeing 747.:frown:

Nice work...

But, why not something like this?

Cuz I already had the single carrier, and to do this would mean two new carrier arms (the tire mounting points are offset to allow two tires)...and they want about $500 ea. for them. My cost? $30.

Other than that?, no reason;)

:eek:thats a damn good reason. and you still have room for cans:cheers:

Maybe consider a lock and cable through the outer rim to your roof rack, just in case the leverage is too much for your set up and your outer rim/tire decides to go awol as you're driving.

Nice work by the way.

We are thinking along the same lines. I use ratcheted straps to hold my kit down on the roof and was thinking using one to tension the tire back to the roof rack. If it deadens the bounce, so much the better. I gotta say, though, it ain't that bad and I don't think it will be a problem...but we will see!
