why do I have two pulleys and two belts connected to the alternator? I could only think it was a fail safe if one broke the other would take over. What say you?

one of my belts broke off, ended up driving like that for over a month with no problem

Think water pump as well.

Not sure, but Toyota is a world leader in Lean Six Sigma and process improvements. I am sure it is vital, if they could have designed it to use only one belt, they would have. If you look at the process flow diagram of how the production line operates, each parts takes X amount of time to install, when you look at leaning out a process, you look at which part takes the longest to install, then determine what needs to be done to reduce the cycle time.

Water pump and alternator and fan use both the belts. On a side note its best to replace them with OEM belts. They come/sold in a matched set. 2 for the price of 1.

Thanks for the info. That's what I thought.

Super cheap too. $6.21 MUD price for the belt set.

Yup, can't beat that. And quiet. IMO you can't go wrong with buying these and the A/C belt as part of your PM since its pretty cheap for LC parts and removing the idler pulley if yours makes noise. Makes the engine real quiet. Good time to modify your fan clutch too.

Yep. I sell it all almost every day. The belts are less than $20 total and the idler is only ~$45. There are a lot of things that are pretty cheap and easy to fix on the 80s. PCV/grommet for less than 8 bucks... valve cover gasket... fuel filter... throttle body gasket... :hmm: Easy to get a big list pretty quick.

Don't forget. Sam's pricing is based on how hard they are to install. The cheaper the parts the harder they are to install. Exception to the belts and supercharger. Ask him how much the oil pump gasket and crank seal cost. :hillbilly:

Sams another great vendor to deal with here.

The dual belt design does two important things.

It cuts the load on the drive belts in half and it doubles the drive contact surface.

Hey man! You're letting out all my secrets!!! :hillbilly:

Can I still drive with only the one belt? One broke on the way to work and need to get home (600ks) 2000 hilux ln172r 5L motor

If there are two belts normally, then yes.

Make sure to remove the chunks of the broken belt.

Turn off the engine before you try to remove the bad belt.

Toyota originally had their hilux, landcruiser and Hiace diesel with this configuration because the alternator had the brake vacuum unit that drives the brake booster. S you can magine if one belt brakes what will happen. Many says to get two belts from the same batch (which I never get to buy) other wise the belts wear out faster or hard to keep the tension on both belts same.
