Has anyone painted the plastic housing of the turn signals? I have some old ones that are faded and need paint. I'm sure there's a plastic paint color but my online search for the topic has come up empty.

Thanks

I painted mine black years ago. You couldn't tell now. All the paint has worn off, like it didn't bond to the plastic very well. I will be repainting the whole truck with in a year so I will be looking for a better paint for the turn signal housings. Again.

I haven't been brave enough to try, but various sites online show how a heatgun can revitalize faded plastic.

One of my favorite guys on youtube shows it done... "Hacknpack shop"

I'm not that brave to do this to my forty, but have been tempted.

Had anyone tried this before?

fhawk5, that river rock looks quite close to the OEM color. I have a '78 that one of the PO's painted mine white............doh!!!! As replacing them is $$$ I just might try that paint....will post up if I do.

Actually Nickel Shimmer may be closer.....

I Know, living in Az fades a lot of plastic...

Yes, you know what I mean! That Krylon paint just may be the ticket.......believe it or not one of the PO's painted over OEM units............sometimes I just don't understand people.

fhawk5 which one do you think is closer to the OEM gray color on '78 turn signals, riverrock??

We use a SEMS dye on any faded plastic.Paint has a tendency to be a little to shiny. The graphite dye has a satin finish and looks just like a new OEM part after it is sprayed.

We do sell it but there are other places that I am sure sell it as well.I don't want to be pushing a sale but it is an amazing product regardless where you get it.

My OEM units were painted white by a PO so not really a fading issue. Appreciate the input though, do you guys add the graphite dye to paint when spraying or no spray and just dye the housings?

tls3601, I believe the river rock is close. As far as the SEMS, I am not sure they have a close color. If they do , then either one would be good.

fhawk thanks and how is the weather down there in Tucson? Happy Thanksgiving.

Why don't you try wet sanding with 600, 800 and 2000 grit and then polishing with plastic polish? That's what I did. It worked great. Took a lot of time and effort though.

Maybe some up on Mt Lemon though? Gorgeous up there...............

The SEMS applies just like paint. With the river rock or the SEMS make sure you scuff the surface w 400-600 sandpaper to allow it to adhere properly. The Graphite is near dead on and will have the exact sheen as the OEM finish.Short of that,my guess is either product may work great.

IMO paint is a last ditch solution and should only be used if the housings are too far gone to save. By "save" I mean sanding off the dried plastic material and buffing the luster back. Once you paint these, it's damn near impossible to take them back down to the original plastic. So once the paint starts to fade or flake (and it will) you have to throw them away. Try the cut and buff first. If that doesn't work, then paint them if you must.

So sand off the white paint? Then see what to do from there?

No, if they've been painted before, you might as well either try painting them again or get new ones. The OP stated that his were just faded, not painted over.
