FWIW, I am fabbing up an intercooler setup now for my SC. Thanks to turbocruiser for the pics so I didn't have to reinvent the wheel. I went with a custom Spearco intercooler that has a four to eight week backlog to make it. Here is a pic of the flange I made and the start of the plumbing.

If you can weld a little, sure you can do one yourself. It also depends how your engine compartment is set up. I have dual batteries so it is going to be harder to run the plumbing. I have to make a new smaller air filter holder to get the pipes past. If it helps you, the top two holes on the intake flange have to be counterbored as the intake has two locating pins there. Another consideration is running a little silicone or rubber hose instead of metal to allow for the engine torqueing/flexing. One other thing is overdriving the SC a bit to allow for the pressure drop of the plumbing and the intercooler.
Here is a pic of the intercooler mockup. I decided to go with a 4 inch smaller core than the mockup to make it easier to run the bottom pipes. I ordered the intercooler two weeks ago so I will have time to work out the plumbing while I wait. I will probably put in a couple of fittings so I can see what the temps are coming out of the SC and on going into the intake. Also, may put in a fitting for a seventh injector or NOS.

Oops, I have about 65k miles on the engine.

Whose intercooler are you going to use? Where can I find it? Dude, don't put NOS in the Cruiser. If you do, you are just asking for problems fom the engine. Where is the cheapest place for the S/C kit?

I must say, from what I've seen from photoman, just because he can do it does not neccesarily mean anyone can , he definitely pushes the envelope and is probably more skilled than most, so good luck

if you had been here for a while you would understand bill has done some of the most insane mods to his truck I have ever seen. the cool thing is from what I have seen they are well thought out and deliberate. If the man says it will have nos I have this funny feeling he has researched it to death and has already weighed the factors well out in advance.
for some real cool stuff look back for his posts on his duct work for the under fender mounted coolers and such. I have a lot of respect for anyone who can do what he ahs done.
Please take no offense from this perhaps you are also extremely skilled in what you do but we dont know you that well yet.

Sammy - Another easier and quicker way to go would be to try to buy just the intercooler and plumbing from the Safari turbo setup. (not all the plumbing would be used) Then the only mod would be that top end stuff that I made in the pic. I always wondered if someone with a turbo has a small accident and their intercooler gets damaged if they can get a replacement. Or maybe with that new MAF turbo setup just the intercooler could be purchased and adapted.

i'm wondering if the intercooler in front of the radiator will cause the radiator to be less effective due to wind blockage? Just curious.

I'm thinking that maybe a top mount intercooler and custom hood scoop would work nicely as well. You can pick up an OE WRX top mount intercooler pretty cheap as everyone rushes to upgrade to the XS engineering piece!

I think I'm going to wait and see how the new turbo system from man-a-fre is going to look. If the price is right, then I just might order one. Hopefully they are not as expensive as Safari's Turbo System.

HOLY SH!T !!! The website (http://210.15.220.239/html/toyota/toyota.html) is asking $10,500!!! Oh man scratch that idea. I wish Safari still sold their Turbo System in the US.

Sammy, I have not looked at that particular site per se but that 10500 is probably AUD, Australian Dollars and would equal about 7300 USD, US Dollars. Still super expensive though!!!

Man-it-ain't-Free is going to target $5-6K for the system and will only offer it installed by them for ~$1500+. They said they'd be getting the first setup "within a month or two" and then install it on their 80, test run it for a month then attempt to go to market.

FWIW, I do not think that that is heresy; the turbo cost is crazy and getting crazier and crazier all the time. To be truthful, when I was shopping around for another Toyota 4x4 ( I have had a trusty rusty 4Runner for many many moons ) I wanted a totally stock cruiser. I wanted factory lockers, excellent maintenance and excellent repair records, no more than one or two previous owners, and an amazingly clean cruiser overall. When I found my rig, I almost walked away due to all the totally tuned things such as safari turbo system and the lift and the brakes and the exhaust, etc. After researching and researching and realizing that in this case, every mod was what i would want, and that every mod was meticulously installed, and that every mod was incredibly maintained, I just could not walk away at all!!! I am glad I got it of course but having to do those things to the cruiser from fresh, I would not do them; I would not spend that much money on mods. I would want sliders and skids and lift and protection but I know myself well enough to know that I would not spend 4000 or more on a turbo, no way, no how. Further, if the engine was ever wanting a rebuild or a replacement, I'd seriously consider a V8 swap, but again, I know myself well enough to know that I would rather have the reliability of the Toyota powerplant over the power of say a Chevy powerplant. HTH

Man-A-Fre is out of their minds. That business model didn't work with the Safari and it won't work with the new turbo either. How many 4+ rear bumpers have they sold. Same thing, they have to install it. They just don't get the idea that many want to do the work themselves to save some cash and enjoy the fun of it. I'l bet that thing flops big time.

I agree 100%, however, at first, and for a long time, MAF did not mandate that they installed the units; I think that as they realized that the safari systems were going to go, they started to mandate that the systems they had left were installed by them in an effort to make the most out of the remaining units? At least that is the story I was told by them, but then again, they have told story after story about the "last turbo available!" I still think that a simpler setup should cost three grand...the safari system is so totally over-engineered and over-fabricated that the cost is so high, the system is sweet, but the cost is so high. I cannot imagine that this AVO setup is worth the extra 3 grand over the Safari! Sheesh, for that much money, I'd rather buy a totally trail dedicated rig that I would not worry about with body damage or with :birf: damage etc!!!

As far as I know Man-A-Fre always insisted on installing the Safari. The only exception I'm aware of is Yomama's truck where he installed it himself.

I am 100% sure that MAF allowed some systems to be intalled in other shops. Mine, for example was installed at Slee.
