One of the first mods I did on my 62.

Intermitant switch-1.jpg

Mine is the 4 speed control. I took just the switch off the center plate and notched out my Land Cruiser plate to fit the larger switch. Moved one wire at a time so I wouldn't get them mixed up. The screw holes between the two switches were different so I used small zip ties to hold it down.

First picture is of the zip tie's. Second is the size of the circuit board and the third is where I had to notch my center plate so the new switch would fit. Sorry about the crappy cell pictures. I will get some of the switch installed later and how much clearance I have.

Oh I am SO confused...

What is the "center plate"? Do you have pics?

"Moved one wire at a time..."? What wires? My plugs were the same, just unplug the old and plug in the new. Do you have pics?

"Screw holes were different..." Again, mine just screwed in place...

What was your source > target vehicle? 87 4Runner > FJ60?

I THINK I see now. You took the 2 apart and recombined in order to keep the cruiser hazard switch?

Yup I kept my Land Cruiser hazard switch and moved the wiper control portion only. Just had to make room for it on the center plate that everything bolts to. Now you cant tell the difference from the factory.

For lack of a better term the center plate is the the black part in the third picture.

Well if I had to do it again I think I'd still opt for the cut top cover for the hazard switch vs all of the work you did... My truck ain't pretty enough to worry about a little cut in the column cover... I have MUCH bigger fish to fry in dealing with the wheeling dents and rust :crybaby:

No I just took a small pick and lifted up on the tab inside the connector and pulled the wire out from the back.

Most of those switches and assemblies seem to be still available from Toyota. Be nice to have a spanky new one. Maybe if BENO sees this thread, he can check part #s for availability and fit... Since it's an electrical part, I wanna be sure I'm ordering the right one, since no return...

At what kind of cost?

Just for the wiper assy alone, I was seeing prices under $70, for the entire wipers/headlight/hazard I didn't look up. Was kinda hoping Onur could chime in, there.

I've seen those assy's aftermarket (Chinese), too, on flea-bay.

Great write-up, Mark, thanks.. And thanks for the additional info, C-fj45.

In 2025 dollars you can find knock of replacements of the mid 1980’s Toyota pickup and 4 runner stalk sets for $25, and it looks like the original part pulled salvage runs 80-100$ on eBay.

I am looking into this as I evaluate how to work around my failing mechanical relay in the truck. Though if the relay is already failing, I wonder if this new stalk will matter?

To make this all happen you need to remove your steering wheel. If you are smart you will park the truck with the wheels straight ahead to make it easier to get the wheel back on straight when you are done. (Ask me how I know)

I seem to do a project that requires steering wheel or linkage removal every five years and keep making that same mistake over and over...

You'd think by the 4 or 5th time I would have learned...

i know this op thread is 13 yrs ago , any opinion(s) about this instead . Op required much modifications & time . My fj62 still works but for how long , who knows the truck is 36 yrs old . Thought about buying from cruiser corps just to have for future . You can still find used oem (rare) , but part is same age .

Marc, these are Taiwan-made combo switches and generally will 'work' but, may require some minor modifications. The center plastic ring on your stock switch is a dark brown and has three nibs. The replacement is white with two nibs. If your old plastic ring is in good shape, it's easy to swap the stock into the new combo. Other than that, they are not OE quality, but work fine. The individual light and wiper switches seem to be good quality, but the wiper functions slightly differently from stock, with a Mist function. FWIW, the individual switches, light, wiper, hazard, can be removed and swapped into the OE switch should those fail, so it's good as a 'parts source' if you want. Does require depinning, and unwrapping the loom, though.

Also, be aware, you will see pictures of these combo switches all over the internet - some will show the brown three-nib center ring, some the white. Whatever you order you will receive the one with the white two-nib ring as they're all made by the same Overseas Co.

Too bad @ToyotaMatt doesn't sell his anymore - they were an exact reproduction.

My only reason for even thinking about this purchase was simply to have something available if and when my OEM ever gets broken or fails. My OEM works fine, except for the high beam function which hasn't worked since I purchased the truck years ago. knowing that there are really no OEM used parts available anymore. And any used parts would be just as old as mine and may not function well. I appreciate the Intel and feedback. Can you think of any other vendor out there that may have something better?
Marc
