Truck was running fine a week ago. the exhaust has been missing for a while. The engine compartment has gotten pretty sooty over time. On Wednesday I noticed it was losing a little hp at higher rpms. I checked the oil and it was a little low. I topped it up. I'm supposed to use 10-w40, but I has some 20-w50 and figured it would be fine to top it up. On the way to work today it was smoking more, and would sputter at higher rpms. On the way home it lost everything. No power and clouds of smoke. I mean clouds. Smoke was bluer at first start-up, but when it lost all the power it looked more black. When I got it home I pulled off the air filter which was pretty clogged and I washed it out. I put it on and fired it back up. Still clouds of smoke. Seemed a little better. but I was looking at the engine and I say what looked like sparks coming from around the area of the exhaust manifold. I was looking around with a head lamp and couldn't find where they were coming from, and I didn't feel comfortable running it with that going on so I shut it down.

At this point I don't there there is much else that I can do other than get it to the shop. I could change the oil, but I am doubting that would fit anything. I took do an oil flush, but I'm thinking the same thing. I could try taking off the air intake and outlet to see if the turbo is completely sooted up. Not much else that I am confident doing myself.

Truck needs work, not sure how much I want to spend at the shop.

Any other forums you guys could recommend for diesel specific stuff?

There is a diesel section here at MUD. Moving you over there. They will be way more helpful than us gassers ever could be.

I got it out. Turns out the exhaust manifold it cracked. And I can't for the life of me find one anywhere.

Can they be welded ,even temporarily? Lots of these engines died a few years back due to unfamiliarity with them. Must be a few exhaust manifolds laying around. Try a wanted ad in the diesel classifieds on MUD.
Do you know what caused it to crack?

Do you have the 2lt-1 with the rocker head or the 2lt-ii with the bucket shim head?

Where r u located?
I might have a ex manifold

Sounds like a case of poor maintenance.

To be honest I'm not sure. I would guess 2lt-1 its an original '84

I'm located in Annapolis, MD, USA

And yes, I don't spend as much time maintaining as I should. But really wouldn't think to check to see if the manifolds are bolted up tight on as a routine.

I can hear a spider s*** in my truck while doing 120k's. Maybe its time to get a little intimate with your truck?

Hey y'all, I didn't get much of a response from anyone on my other thread n I'm in need of some 2LT2 Expertise. plz help guys. My dumb 25 year old ass has spent over 7k CAD on this truck (93 Hilux surf, came with a 2LTE that was blown up after Chinese head replacement) and have been wrenchin for weeks, only to have it not start 🙃🙃🙃🙃 PLZ HELP.

I've got the engine in the truck and I modified the harness so that everything plugs in. However I've noticed some differences in my engine. Compared to the 2LTE that was in it, first off mechanical injection pump and alot of stuff is either missing or has been intentionally deleted. The EGR has been removed and blocked off, there are no butterfly valves in the intake, there is just a solid spacer on the intake manifold where there would be a butterfly valve for the EGR system.

The injection pump itself does not have the ASDC or w.e it's called, ( the thing that has coolant lines running to it ) neither does it have any EGR stuff on it. It has one boost compensator on the top with a vacum line going nowhere. I can't seem to make sence of the vacum lines either, the EGR us not there anymore and I'm struggling to understand where this compensator would get either boost/vacum that it needs.

The injection pump itself has only 2 connectors, one is a 1 pin, and the other is 2 pin. I have no idea what these are for. Some sort of fuel cut and spill valve connectors? The harness has a 2 wire section that the previous owner has cut off and one of the wires goes to the single pin connector on the injection pump. The other has just been cut and goes nowhere kinda dangles in the wind.

There are a few other connectors that I've found homes for on the deleted EGR stuff.

Basically every plug in for a connector that the engine physically has on it, has been plugged in .

Went to try and start the truck and nothing. It cranks and cranks and cranks but no sign of firing. See white smoke seeping out of the exhaust but just barely, seems like my engines not getting any fuel. It has good compression.

Im stumped as to why or which wires go where and im having alot of trouble finding info on the wires that go to the injection pump.

ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

Also if this thread would be better suited somewhere else please let me know or link the thread , thank-you everyone for taking the time to read this essay lol.
