Looking at my new-to-me Troopy and wanting to convert a couple of the sliders to gull wings and looking at the prices for the available ones got me thinking....
Has anyone used a relatively cheap locking marine hatch to fabri-cobble together a gull wing arrangement? Of course I wouldn't want it to look TOO funky but...

Alternatively I've seen some DIY gull wing builds that look doable.

Hello,

It is better to get a good set of gull wings than to fabricate them. Money well spent in my book.

I would love to have two rear gullwings/emu wings on my troopy, but never could justify the price. I have family. Something like half a new gear box for two windows.

They appear very well designed and made with good materials. It would be very hard to replicate the quality and fit imo.

Been looking for some secondhand ones for yonks, to no avail.
Maybe on the second troopy I am building I may look into putting hinges on the existing rear sliders. But the commercial units are very neat indeed.

I've seen a couple of videos of DIY that looked pretty great. I am going to look into the marine hatch idea but I'm not sure it would be any better or cheaper than DIY.

aside from the fact that i aint interested in a gullwing hatch personally, i mean, its like a snorkel, you'll get way more attention from guys than girls, but hey, if thats what your into,,,,,,

seriously though, if you have a decent home shop and are competent in making things its a pretty straightforward build.

ive seen some vids too, the one that stands out is the land rovery discovery one, he did a good job on it.

On a 4 door or a short WB rig I'd agree re: snorkel. On a Troopy it sure would be nice to have a little access from the sides.

the windows slide,,,,, POOF! access

but i know what you mean

MOAR ACCESS!!!

:grinpimp:

i say give it a shot, the money saved to build them if they work would buy alot of fuel

I resemble that remark ;). Gull wing has been solid for my 77. Use the hell out of it camping. Retractable water, Power access, camp stuff we get at all the time. Watched a downloaded NBA game from all up inside it last dude trip. Do it.

I never did understand the design of the HZJ77 (or any 76/77/78 LWB 4 door) OEM rear windows. The way it curves around and only pop opens a little for venting. Sliding windows like the ones offered on other 70 series models would be been nicer.

Am I reading that right that glass is cheaper than the aluminum versions? I'll be reaching out to them today. I'll be reaching out to them today.
Hm, yes, i think so. Maybe it is cheaper because they are producing their glass in house!?

Unfortunately there is no option for the SWB 70 yet, but they invited me to visit them with my shorty and discuss a possible solution.

I was looking into something like this for my BJ74 extra high FRP top I have. Since that top came from Europe it doesn’t have side windows so fitting any sort of marine or bulkhead type.

I also looked into some thick lexan so I could just roll my own. It’s still on the table, somewhere far down there….

I have some of the groundwork I did I can post up if you want.
