It's never too late to learn, you know. I think my dad started me when I was like 11. You guys are going to pass right by some of the best fly fishing in all of the US as well (McCloud River, Upper Sac, Pit, Klamath --> right near Mt Shasta)

Oh I know and it sucks too because we both love fish. We have zero fly gear so that puts us at a slight disadvantage.

If you decide to change your route and go out the east side of Glacier through the Blackfeet reservation to Cut Bank, be wary. It's remote and some of the locals there seem to like to mess with passing tourists. It happened to me and a friend after he had warned me about it. I can pm details if you are interested. Sorry no tech but just an FYI. Sounds like an awesome road trip!

Well I actually considered it to be honest. PM me the details.

Issue 2:
Last week the truck developed a really bad sway in the rear. No weight has changed and at first I suspected it was the typical Lexus wobble at speed but this was different. It happened going straight on the highway and it was as if someone was rocking the truck back and forth. Not a sway, a hard rocking. I checked the shocks and sure enough I have one that is leaking pretty bad. I have some shocks coming my way but wanted to find out if I should be looking at something else as well while I am there. BTW my suspension is bone stock.

Issue 3:
The rear brakes are gone and so are the rotors. I just ordered new rear rotors from brakeperformance.com and I already have a set of rear pads. The job itself should be pretty simple. What is strange is that I am getting a metallic rubbing noise when I am pulling away from a stop. It goes for a second and stops and only comes back when pulling from a stop. I suspect its just drag on the remaining pad but not sure until I get the wheels off. I just can't take off the wheels until I get all the parts off. Anything else I should be looking for?

I experienced a similar wobble during a trip. Mostly happened when I was driving down hill and into a curve, where hitting the breaks was required. A few weeks later I find out I needed new break pads. A set of rear rotors and new pads took care of that issue.

The trips sounds exiting. You are going to have a blast.

Clearlake, CA is considered one of the top bass fishing lakes in the US right now.

I'd love another excuse to go down there and fish it again. :D

Other than that, tons of good fishing lakes around here, mostly for trout or bass. I fish bass, and do have access to a bass boat, rods, and tackle. :hmm:

Ok lets throw this out there....my son has NEVER caught a fish in his life. And its not for trying. I took him deep sea fishing as well and he struck out. So....

Well, I usually fish Howard Prairie lake around here. About 30 minutes away from Ashland (just south of Medford). Beautiful lake with beautiful camping, if you want to camp on one of the island it can be done.

Probably get to see the bald eagles, I think they have an eaglet.

I can pretty much guarantee you that you will catch a fish. Might be a small smallmouth bass, but you'll catch one.

Last time I was up I struck out, and by that I mean nothing over a lb. Two times before I caught a 2 lb bass each time. :grinpimp:

Sounds like a fun trip! If you're heading to the GC North Rim, I highly recommend camping in the Toroweap area: Grand Canyon National Park - Toroweap/Tuweep Area (U.S. National Park Service)

It's a loooong but easy dirt road to get out there, but when my wife and I went last summer it felt like we had that entire side of the canyon to ourselves.

Also went through Yellowstone on that trip, and was able to catch some trout in the Snake river on just an ultralight spinning rig with artificials and barbless hooks.

You originally posted you're going up the coast to Oregon but you map shows I5 from the Bay area.
So...if by chance you actually do go 101, you can look me up in Mckinleyvill, CA,
Just 15 miles north of Eureka.
Love to meet you...if you're going this way. Otherwise, never mind.
Have a great trip.
In going to Crater(which I've been to many times) try to do the boat ride out of Cleatwood Cove. You'll love it if you can hack the mile switchback trail down into the crater.
Have fun.

Yeah 101 may still happen but I wanted to do Crater Lake and visit the Jefferson Cruiser folks so I will be more than likely along the 5. But who know, I could wind up cutting over. :D

Good tip on Cleatwood Cove. Adding that to the list.

101 (and 1) is great drive but slower. If you decide to take the longer route we could meet up on the mcgrew trail comes in on either direction, and come into grants pass/medford and from there is a straight shot to crater lk. Medford to CL is only 60-70mi and on your way to 97 based on your map.

Even if not the trail, coming up through Euraka (russ in cali) 199 into town is a nice route.

summer trip

NLXTACY,

Just got back from a trip to Idaho with my son. He's 18 so he did most of driving.
If you are near Missoula and take highway 12 you could do part of the Lolo motorway We entered near Powell and took Parachute Road up to the Lolo motorway. The regular map on the GPS had the whole road on it including the side roads. You need to carrry a shovel and a bucket if you travel the back country in Idaho It a single lane dirt road that runs along the top of the ridges above Hyw 12. We went east to west and it took a couple of days, 5 to 10 mph or less We drove some of it in low range just because it was easier.
You would be best to check with the ranger station at Powell or west end of the road so you enter the right place.
It was a great trip and I would do it again in a heart beat. The LX averaged about 14 mpg and was down as low as 10 on the motorway.Son drove it harder than I did and seemed to get better mileage??? He used his Ipod for the calcs.
All the best on your trip. The memories your ( you will too) son will have will last a lifetime even if some times he doesn't seem to be paying much attention.

Thanks jb
:)

Somewhere else I thought about.....

Dunno how far south you want to go from Seattle to Idaho, but if you can stop by Lake Wallowa, I've heard it's absolutely amazing.

It's in the north-east corner of Oregon, near Milton-Freewater.

any chance you will be going near Azusa California? im looking at purchasing a roof top tent from there, and trying to save a little on shipping if you were interested in some fuel money.

Azusa isn't very far from me at all.

So you want me to pick up a RTT and then trust me NOT to use it before dropping it off to you? :hmm:

I'll start playing with the map and see how the route looks. After all the PMs I've been getting I am thinking this is going to turn out to be a very cool trip indeed. I'll post up the new map soon.

On your way through portland...you will be really close to Browns camp one of the best 4x4 areas in the NW Browns Camp OHV Area they have trails for everyone from stock Cadillac escalades to the most extreme rock crawlers...it is really fun, just make sure you get and oregon OHV permit!!

PS you will also be near this trail: Blacktail / Wild Bill National Recreation Trail in MT which got the BFG Trail of the year award in 2008 (along with others)

i dont care if its been used a little on the way up. here is a link to what im looking at:

Rooftop Tents from Overland Accessories - eBay (item 220461261484 end time Aug-11-09 23:33:17 PDT)

i would have to either meet you near montana or find another way to get it the rest of the way as I am in calgary alberta.

the other thing is it would be nice to know if it is half decent quality or a waste of funds on the way to buying a proper tent. if your in the neighbourhood and get a chance it would be good to know. BTW his non shipped price is 450. Ive been sending some emails.
