SILVER Star
Those of you who haven't to Mill's Canyon, outside of Roy, NM, it needs to be high on the list of destinations. It's about 3.5 hours from Abq, a very easy drive. The last few miles can be rocky but still easy if you have a subaru or higher clearance rig. You can camp at the official CG or camp by the river as the canyon is very long. There are two CGs: Mill's canyon (at the bottom of the canyon) and Rim CG (at the top of the canyon). The Rim CG is equestrian friendly with each spot having it's own paddock. Both CGs are dry camp grounds.
The rivers are crossable and plenty of places to go hiking, MTBing. The Canadian river is shallow and wasn't moving too fast but it was very COLD. Still, the kids played in the water for a bit before it started raining and booming.
The best time to go would be spring and autumn/fall. It does get rather toasty at the bottom of the canyon and probably quite buggy. This time we had no bugs or any goat heads so the dogs had a good time. Due to bad weather, we had the entire CG to ourselves, with the exception of two moto guys from ABQ. As we wandered along the river, we found two more Tundras camping by the river in a tree grove.
This canyon is full of history. Read all about it here: http://www.summitpost.org/canadian-river-canyon-mills-canyon/276153
This was the first real wheeling/camping trip for the low rider Runner. Trails got muddy during the rain and the worn out tires didn't do too badly. I think I heard the ATRAC kick in once or twice but for the most part, slow and steady worked nicely.
