I reset my trip odometer at this last fillup and now its not working. Sometimes it rolls over a little but gets stuck, sometimes it doesn't roll over. Is there a fix for this other than a new IP?

Yikes, this just happened to me over the weekend. I was wondering if it is somewhat connected with the speedo sensor? Although mine works, just the trip meter...

Sub'd...

You aren't alone, mine has quit recently too. There are some older threads about this but I don't remember a satisfactory (easy, cheap) solution and have just been ignoring it and writing down my odometer mileage when I fill up instead of relying on the trip meter. Search for "tripometer" and you will get a few results.

This is a feature of the 80 so you aren't constantly reminded how crappy your gas mileage is. :)

I experienced the same thing awhile back and asked the same question here. I got no real fix to the problem and have just left it alone. My speedometer works great and the mileage is added just fine. I'm afraid to rip into it for fear of making things worse.

Fairly common, stripped gear on trip odometer. As far as I know the only fix is to pull the unit and send to a speedo shop for repair or try to disassemble and replace the stripped gear.

X2 ^

Or, as also stated, ignore it, it's a feature of 80's that is activated at a specific time so as not to remind you of your MPG. Note to self, if you were buying an 80 for the MPG, you should probably sell your LC/LX and get a Prius.

I haven't opened mine up to see what it looks like on the inside for the aforementioned reason, but I was told in an earlier thread that it's not as easy as changing a stripped gear. I have changed a speedo gear in a '98 Mustang that stripped causing the entire speedo to be inoperative, it was an easy fix with the new gear. I'd jump on it if all it needed was a new gear. I'm lacking knowledge here, so if anyone knows how the tripometer is made and what breaks making it inoperative please educate me.

if it were about mpg I could live with it, but it makes following guide books so much easier with you can zero your trip.

If the actual speedometer is reading and it is just the odo then try tapping the button in and out a few times, they often stick. If the speedometer AND trip is not working the gears may have stripped?

Oh and what crappy mileage? 28 MPG at my last check :flipoff2:

regards

Dave

28mph on an HDJ? That's weak! I'd get more than that if I just park it at home... LoL...

Mine was working either, use to check between locations and some "southern" directions I get from time to time. One day I pushed it in, and manually pulled it out, it works. The spring could get worn and it won't return it back to "engaged" mode. Try that.

yeah, the speedo is still working and it used to get jammed a lot, I will try pulling it out.

Add me to the club also mine hasn't worked in years

No dice on pulling it out, I also tried holding it in for a while to let the wheel maybe grab a different set of teeth...no luck either.
