Hi Guys, new here and new to owning an 2001 LC100. I live in Botswana and I recently got one for a daily driver. It has a 4speed auto trans and the previous owner mentioned changing the trans at around 270k its at 285k rn. I have an ask, can I swap the 4speed for a 5speed in later models? I sometimes feels like the v8 is struggling a bit and overrevving. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

I also have a 4 speed and would be curious to feel how the 5 speed responded. But if it ain’t broke then don’t fix it.

Over time you’ll probably get used to it especially now a days with 8 speeds being the norm. At the end of the day these things weight nearly 3 tons.

this has been discussed before,
IIRC the wiring harness and ECU would need to be replaced along with the trans, and maybe the driveshafts?? might be some other things also

I must be lucky, 381k and counting all original engine, transmission and transfer case. I have a 5 speed 4Runner v8 and can see the appeal. I am sure the shifter system would be also required to get all selectable gears. My Runner combination side stick, and forward back movement crates the each selected gear.

Now the trans is Not slidding, bumping, or harsh engagements so far, or when I pulled the engine to fix the two oil leaks, rear and front oil passage orings .. I would have dropped the trans right then. A340 series trans are really heavy duty inside. Lots of caged needle bearings, and thrust bearings compared to bushings and plastic thrust bushings in other brands. I have not had a 5 speed apart but a few 4 speeds in older runners A340H versions.
I am sure the heavier Land Cruiser uses thicker clutch stacks in direct or forward clutch drums, and also electronic pressure regulated Vrs throttle cable controlled pressure, Some differences for sure but basic operations will be close.

Tye A340F trans and A340H the input shafts are interchangeable. I use to do that for auto trans 3.0 to 3.4 v6 swaps to get the 3.4 torque converter to work on earlier transmissions. The A343 I don’t know in out LCs. Mine is a 1999… I will say use OEM yota / Lexus trans fluids. Why not ! Drain and fill trans and screens inside the pan if you are so to clean or replace.

I bought mine LC used from the original owner and Yoya did all the oil changes and fluid changes over the years. He had every receipt in a file if you can believe that. Who knows, but it’s still going.

I have seen personally aftermarket fluid cause trans converter shutter in some yotas. Back
To oem it stopped. Whats different who knows. I really don’t care, just use Oem and call
It good, Why risk it over a few bucks.

Just some of My esperiance I am sharing.

Thanks for info guys, I'll look more into and see where i go with this, I might end up not changing at all of the costs and cons outweigh the benefit

The 4-speed transmission are updated versions of the A343F transmission in the 80 series. The 5-speed is A705F and is not a direct replacement. Yes, you can make it work. Yes, it's a lot of work, if you don't do this swap for a living.

FWIW, there is no reason to do anything with the A343F unless it give you trouble. Other than changing the fluid regularly, that is.

A better alternative for you (and, I'm very jealous) is to get a manual gearbox from Australia. The 105 series (100 series with 80 series axles) came from the factory with a 5-speed manual.
