Hello all -

New here. Just bought a 2005 Landcruiser, after owning a '78 many years ago. Nice to have another again.

Was driving today and the check engine light, VSC lights all lit up. When stopped and engine off, the emergency flashers start up, even if I hit the on/off button.

Pulled the code P0705:
Transmission range sensor circuit malfunction
Probable cause:
Open of short circuit condition
Poor electrical connection
Misadjusted TR sensor
Failed TR sensor

Have any of you experienced this? What is my best course of action??? Sorry, pretty new to all the electronics.

Thanks,
Chase

I don't have the trans manual for my '04, so I don't know where the range sensor is, but it may be near the shifter (to sense what gear the trans is in). Did you run a search on this forum? After you track down where it is, I suspect you'll find a loose or corroded electrical connection.

Found the range sensor, pulled the connector and all the pins are clean. Re-intalled and re-set the codes. Will drive it a bit to see if the code comes back on. May have a bad sensor???

Also about the exact same time that this issue came up, my emergency flashers stay on when the engine is off. Pushing the button does not alter the flashers (still on). when the engine is on, i can activate the flashers with the button (on and off). When the engine is off, they are stuck on. Thoughts?

The windshield may have been replaced and not sealed properly. Check the driver and/or passenger front footwells to see if there is water accumulation. If it's wet it can cause chaos in the electronic system.

bdac - perhaps you are right! My wife took it through the car wash with the sun roof tilted open. I was driving it and found a dribble of water down the driver pillar at the side impact curtain logo. Have a fan running under the dash and will see if the air flow dries it out.

Follow up - ran a fan and lower heater most of the afternoon to get any remaining moisture out. Re-set the codes and put the hazard/flasher fuse back in and it seems to be working for now. Will give it a few 100 miles to cycle through the diagnostic checks, but hoping it works out. Flashers are operating normally. Thanks!

A couple of years later, I'm having the same problem, when I'm driving and put my foot on the brake the reverse transmission light, lights up and the rear view camera springs to life. Needless to say it's bit distracting. So my question is where is the transmission range sensor?

Sounds like a bad ground or water somewhere, have you been changing lamps in your tail lights recently. Or have you got tow bar electrics.

Bumping this...my 06LX threw this code this morning. I reset and it’s driving ok for now. Where is this thing? On top of the trans?

This is my first post on ih8mud and this is as good a reason as any.

I bought a 2009 LX last week and everything was going great. I hooked up a trailer and immediately got the P0705 code. It is running fine but the check engine and stability control lights are on and the 4 low light is flashing. I tried to put it into and out of 4 Low to reset it but no luck. 4 Low worked perfect yesterday.

Thoughts on clearing the code to see how it behaves without the trailer? I've never done this but do have the OBDII reader and phone app. Maybe the trailer wiring harness or trailer itself has a short and confused the system.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I just stumbled across your question when researching this code myself. I don't know if you ever found your answer, but you may have more success over in the 200 series section, since that's what you have. There has been a little discussion about it over there, although not a lot of definitive solutions... Thanks for responding. I reset codes and everything was fine, until I connected trailer lights again and the same thing happened. Previous owner had installed an ETrailer harness that may be the problem. I plan to take it by Uhaul and have them install their connections and hopefully that takes care of it.

I posted my results, similar to the OP in that thread I linked. I installed some aftermarket LED reverse lights that are very bright and they were fine for about 4-5 months but eventually, I think they blew that 10amp fuse. Then the second replacement fuse only lasted a week, so I upped that fuse to a 15amp. So far, so good 🤷🏻‍♂️

Transmission range sensor / neutral safety switch from Jan 2015 update

7 years ago I posted about my reverse light on the dash and the rear view camera operating while driving forward.
Engine light and VTRAC & VSC lights went on. I plugged in the OBDII reader and the P0705 was the fault. I erraresed / reset the trouble code a couple of times.
Eventually it didn’t return
I live in Vancouver Canada and during the time this was happening it was below zero and we had snow on the ground.

Update August 2022
The rear parking shoes have not been working well. I’m finding when I park on a hill the truck is “resting” on the transmission ie. the parking brake isn’t completely holding all the weight of the truck. I know this isn’t good for it!
Anywho, a couple of weeks ago on a very hot day. I put the truck in drive and the parking light on the dash stays on! One kilometre down the road the engine light comes on! The VSC & VTRAC light up!
My dash looks like a Christmas tree!
I plug in the OBDII in and P0705 comes up I reset it.
I replaced the rear shoes, pads, rotors and a new cable to the passenger side e-brake.

I’ve been researching replacing the neutral safety switch.
It’s found on the passenger side mid-
transmission
For the 2004 it is Toyota part 84540-51010
There is different versions depending on model year.

The temperature in Vancouver has cooled down, around 25 C
I turned the truck on today the parking light stays off! ie. It doesn’t light up when I drive! The engine light and VTRAC and HSC
stay on. I reset with the OBDII and the dash light / Christmas tree has not returned.
I have my fingers crossed.
I’m convinced that the neutral safety switch on my 2004 LX470 is temperature sensitive!
I know it sounds crazy considering I’m in a pretty mild climate.
I have found a lot of info on ih8mud so I wanted to share hoping it might be useful to someone in the community.

In the end the truck has fixed it’s self!
With a few resets / erase’s by me.
Crazy eh (aka A) , I love my truck!
But it can be a trying love affair at times!
I did order the part 😎

Parking light remains on
Reality bights!
After a day of driving without the Parking light on, I posted a day ago the truck had fixed itself.
Today the light has remained on.
Very disappointing!
Next step is to change the neutral safety switch.

Transmission range sensor update #3
After a cool evening I started up the Lx
And shifted into drive, low and behold the neutral safety switch is work fine!
So if it matters to anyone, temperate can make a difference!
