Hi, the ol' 85 GXL Hj60 needs some transmission attention, it has an automatic atm and have been quoted $3300AU to rebuild plus replace pan which i am happy with but I keep thinking what are my other options to upgrade the old 4 speed if i am going to spend that type of money. This car is a daily family use car that hauls wood during winter and camping trips etc, in a rural area with most trips being on the open road so an extra gear would be useful.

Should i consider a 5 speed manual conversion or even a 5 speed automatic upgrade, i heard a Chev Turbo 700 would be a better option and are easy to procure.

I would really appreciate if you guys could help me decide what to do, i'm getting flustered like a kid in a candy store trying to get the best value for a dollar!

Regards Paul

Australia is the country to just stop at an abandoned wreck and ask a walkpasser to help swap the 5speed and turbo over, I heard...

I'd also vote for an H55f.

What transfer case is behind your automatic? I'm installing a rebuilt 3FE from my '89 FJ62, along with a new H55f, into my '86 FJ60. I'm using the FJ62 transfer case because it has the bearing supported output gears (the older transfer cases in the US used bushings). I bought new parts to convert from vacuum front drive engagement to manual engagement.

I can't speak for the diesel but the H55f was the single greatest thing that has ever been added to one of my Cruisers. It totally changed my 84' FJ60.

Was, over the last several years the booming Chinese economy has seen many scrap dealers trolling the countryside for all the metals they can pilfer!! :-(

Not sure, never considered they would be different, i'm probably going to take her to a mechanic that seems to have some sound knowledge about toyotas in the next town from me and have him check out a few other things so ill check it out then.

I spoke to a HJ61 owner in town who has just converted and he said the same, although he said it was a hell of a job getting it done. I would have to rely on mechanics to do the work as i couldnt keep her off road long enough for me to do the work but i'm considering it more and more the further i research it, bigger financial outlay but better performance and fuel consumption return, thanks mate.

IT is a simple swap in a FJ60. Basically goes in the same spot as the 4 speed. 84' and earlier models require a plug added to the transfer adapter and oiler added. I am betting the brackets for the clutch pedal are under the dash but swapping from an auto to a standard would be more work than dropping a 5 speed in a 4 speed rig.
