Transmission Fluid Too High?

So I'm doing a lot of PM this summer and while contemplating a better way to remove the PITA fuel filter, I found myself staring at the dip stick for the transmission. So I checked it. The truck has been off for about 4 days now, however the level was right in the middle of where it should be if it were hot. Two questiosn:

How bad is it to run with too much transmission fluid?

How much do I need to drain out? I know that with engine oil, the distance between the H and L marks are usually 1 full quart. Any such standard here?

It is not accurate to test the tranny fluid this way...the engine should be on and you should slowly shift through each gear from park to low and to park again. Hold your foot on the brake and hold each gear in gear for about five to ten seconds. This gets the right amount of fluid into all the areas so that you can get a good test. If you do this with the tranny cool, then the fluid should be around the cool mark, if you do it with the tranny hot, then it should not go above the hot mark. As far as how to adjust the level if it is too high, I would simply drain the three to four quarts out, replace with fresh ATF and make sure not to overfill. To answer another question, you should not overfill a tranny, but until you check it correctly, you wont know whether to add or remove fluid. HTH

Let me clarify something; I went and re-read my post and confused myself! When I say drain the three to four quarts what I mean is simply remove the drain plug...two to three to four quarts will come out, whatever comes out is what was in the pan, the rest is in all those areas in the tranny. Replace the drain plug, and add at least two full quarts. Then do the proper test process, measure the fluid and add accordingly. Still, for grins and giggles, first test what you have in there so that you will know what you have in there. Ahh hell, I'm still confusing myself, you know what I mean!?! Right? HTH.

When was the last time you did a "drain and fill" on the tranny?
Like turbo said, if you do it right yourself, how can you go wrong?

Just a question to clarify something - Is there not an overflow hose for the tranny that effectively prevents an overfilled condition from existing for very long? ??? (there was on my old Bronco)
