If I had a three speed transfer case (works great) and a 4 speed transmission can I use the input gear from my old xfer case (4spd) in the 3spd transfer case and mount it to my 4spd transmission?

probably if it's the 74 listed in your sig. you should have the transition gear. as long as the spline count is the same, you'll be good.

then you'll change your driveshafts and speedo cable, maybe and park brake cable, maybe

Yes it is, can't I use the front and rear out put flanges so I don't have to cange out my DS?

You will have to change both D/S anyway. the 4spd is longer than the 3. (longer front, shorter rear)

Yea my tranny is a 4spd and I am going to have to rebuild/replace my transfer case. I know that the transfer cases on the 3spds and 4spds are identical with some minor differences, one being the gear that slides over the tranny output shaft (different splines between 3spd and 4spd). I was wondering if I found a good transfer case and happened to be from a 3spd tranny if I could swap output shaft gears. I should not have to mess with DS lengths.

Check output shaft tooth counts. If I remember right one is a 29 tooth gear and one is 31 tooth, you cannot interchange them.

they will inter change with the right parts .you need the transition gear and a rear bearing.your 74 may already have the right gear and the flanges should fit the 3 speed case.there are vendors on here who also sell kits with all the parts you need good luck

The 74 had a three speed case and 4 speed trans that is why it came with the gear. When I changed my 77 to the 3 speed case all I needed was the input gear and bearing the flanges bolted on and so the drivelines bolted right up.
