Aloha! New member and first time post. My 99 100 series has started to make some noise and had it towed to a mechanic. He says I should replace the transfer case rather than rebuilding. I’m on the Big Island and we are having some difficulty finding a replacement. Any help or suggestions on where I could find a reliable case? Thanks in advance

More info would be great, circumstances where it makes noise, where's the noise coming from. I will say, more than once on here a mechanic has diagnosed a bad t-case when it's just been the CV clips.

^^

Seems like dozens of forums have popped up over the years where a mechanic blames the T-Case only to find the issue with the front axle / clips , so don't just throw a new transfer case at it yet.

How to diagnose? IDK , I think you need to look at the front end and see if the axle is just spinning in the hub, but maybe someone with more experience can chime in for troubleshooting ideas.

drain the oil in the transfer and see if it has chunks in it??
X2 on checking other stuff in addition before replacing the transfer
more diagnosis needed

The noise seems to be coming from somewhere around the area below the back of the hood/dash area. It was sounding like a scraping/grinding noise when I was trying to shift into reverse to back up from the parking spot I was in. Mechanic drained the TC oil and said that there was some metal in it but didn’t say if it was chunks. The mechanic that I took it to was recommended as he’s a LC owner as well (FJ40) and has plenty of knowledge of the LCs.

Is your H-N-L transfer shifter firmly in place? Maybe cycle through it a few times

Does the vehicle move at all? Do you hear the grinding when you aren't moving or only once you start to drive?

I have one of the early (read low cost) original Steelman Chassis Ears that uses direct wiring instead of wireless senders.

I need to run a health check on my rear diff and suspension.

Chassis Ears have saved me a bunch of money over the years. The model I have now sells for about $100.

It was making the noise when I was shifting from park into reverse. No noise while in park. The mechanic told me he got it into low four wheel and it is moveable.

+1 to Flanges

Just stand by one of the front wheels and get somebody to put it in gear and try to roll.

If sounds like a spoon being chewed up in a garbage disposal coming out of the wheel hub, its flanges.

A few years, I saw a decent condition 100 being sold for salvage yard price because the mechanic thought it was bad transmission. It was only flanges.
