I just spent the last few hours buttoning everything up to come and double check my fluids... I put Redline 'MTL-LV' a GL-4 oil in the transfer case. Come on here and everyone says GL-5 is the ticket. How worried should I be? Should I dump it without even trying to drive it and go get a GL-5 oil?

Edit: gl4/5 ok but this seems a bit thin though too? Its a 70w/75w oil. Doesnt thicken as it gets warm like a 75w90 oil… but it does say on the bottle that it’s suitable to replace toyota LF 75w which is that $90/quart oil which i think is sometimes recommended by toyota for this application? My 2006 lx470 owners manual says gl4/5 75w-90 non-hypoidal. So i guess this is still outstanding as a question.

Thickness question not resolved but GL4 or GL5 is allowed in the TC per the following...

The next one has really bad formatting but also allows gl5 or gl4.

Anyone have anything to shed on this? I have to drive it this week for my commute and want to know if i should stay up late to change it out.

For what it’s worth, the first number is the cold temperature and the second number is the hot temperature so no 75 while hot is not the same as 90 while hot.

Lol, I gave up.. the MTL-LV was a 70w/75w oil as a direct replacement for Toyota LF Transfer Case oil... I think I must've been looking at 80-series tech forum when I ordered it. Not specifically recommended for the 100-series. My manual asks for a GL4 or GL5 75w-90 as does the service manuals. I went ahead and drained and filled with redline MT-90, a GL4 75w-90. It's not a hypoid gear oil but then again there's no hypoid gears in that transfer case. Nor is there a clutch pack. There may or may not be brass/bronze in the transfer case, someone thinks there was a change in 2010/2011 and brass/bronze was added?

FYI- the MTL-LV came out very clean, only had maybe 150-200 miles on it. Magnet was just as clean as when I put it in.
