See what I mean ...

The title of the thread is 'Transfer Case Help'

You asked if the one you want to buy will work.

People told you there's a difference in production years and possible problems.

Jim told you how to tell the production date of the one you want to buy.

You tell him he's off topic - then proceed to change the topic to smog.

Who's off topic ... (or their meds) ?

I'm not trying to be an A-hole, I'm just tryin' to say you're making it very hard for people to want to help you...

(did you click on the link in Jim's sig: <useful parts FS> ??

I am thankful for all help given. I did not say he was off topic, I said I had an off topic question about his plug set, only b/c he was fequenting this post, and fely like I could get a speedy response. All that said, this is crazy to continue this back and forth mess. Yes, I have a lot of questions, I have bought a manual, and will still probably have a lot of questions. Again, I am thankful for everyones help.

He cannot find a date anywhere on the case. Here is a pic he sent me. This is where I told him to look, but I guess they are not always in the same place. I think I will just get it and hope for the best.

Post 13, Pic #1, shows the early location for date code. On the rear of the case beside the PTO cover.

Sometime around 86 or 87 it migrated up to the very top of the case. (Which is fokking impossible to read w/ the body on  )

Thanks for the education on the date stamps. Did you notice the wire coming off the front half of that case. I know my 62 has a sensor there but when did 60's put a sensor on for in/out shifting?

And I can say for certain that a t-case from a 62 will fit on an 85 H55 from a BJ 60. Mines ready to go back in.

Yeah, when I saw the pic of the date location, I thought that seemed pretty stupid. Thanks for the other location I will have him look there.

AFAIK, all 60 series have the switch on the frt of the case for the 2/4WD light.

It is the switches on the back half for neutral and low range that come & go depending on year & option.

I wonder if it is on newer cases. My 82 BJ and the 83 FJ 60 my buddy got his tranny and tcase from do not have that sensor. And there is no place on the dash for an indicator light either.

Found out from someone else that they put vacuum shift on some t-cases on manual tranny's as early as 84. I didn't know they did such a thing.

I finally got the number off the case. It is 5I5683, so it should be a sept 85 which should bolt right up. The I is hard to make out, but the first response in this thread said that anything past 5/85 would work and it doesnt resemble any of the first 5 letters in the alphabet so I think I'm good to go. I will post the pic on here tonight, I just dont have access to it while I'm at work.

If your tranny has the spacer on the back of the gearbox the older t-case's will not fit. If the t-case is bolted direct to the tranny (no spacer) its the older style. The first pic is my older t-case bolted to a 4 speed and the other one with half the newer style transfer case is my H55 with the spacer.

One thing I found as I combined parts for my 5 speed install, the main transfer gear has the same splines older or newer but the gear teeth from an older case is a different size that will not fit a new case.

The seal surface between the gearbox and t-case is part of the tranfer gear on a newer style case and on older cases it's a seperate piece from the gear.

If the used t-case is off the tranny, take a pic of the side that bolts to the tranny and I or someone else can tell you if its the older style that may or may not fit your 87.

I got the transfer case today and the one I got has the smaller idle shaft. I attempted to spit the caseand it seems like something is holding it together. It will only seperate about a half inch. All the bolts are removed. Is there something I am missing, or do I just need to apply a lot of force to seperate them. I will post a pick of where it mounts to the tranny once I get it seperated. If anyone has a suggestion as to how I can make this work I will be very greatful.

Lemme see if I can find some pix ... brb.

Did you remove the large nut on the output shaft ?

This one.

If yes, and you have all the rim bolts removed, gently tap on the idler (middle) shaft - it may be holding up the case. It should come apart fairly easily, but may take a couple taps with a mallet.

If anyone has an idea as to how i can make this work please let me know. I really need to make what i have work without buying a 300 dollar rebuild kit.

Are you going to use the New T'case you got ? The different size idler is fine, if that's what you're worried about.

Just inspect the bearings/components as you reassemble. If you don't want to buy gaskets, reuse the old gaskets and smear liberally with gray or orange permatex RTV.

If you find a suspect bearing, you can buy individually. The numbers on the bearing are standardized, so you can take it to a local store. Don't buy a Chinese bearing, if you need one - buy Japanese or American. Timkens will be a good value.

Since you never said what was the problem with your original t'case, or if the new one is ready to use, I can't really be much more help than that.
