If you don't have the longer spacer just use the pto gear. No reason to look for the longer spacer if you do not have one already.

There can't be a leakage issue because the new tcase doesen't have a hole and oil sloshing around in the spacer is not a big deal. Does the spacer you have isolate the two sections between the web? Or is the web only at the tcase side. Post a pic of the spacer if you can.

Tony

I will try to get some pics today of the inside of the spacer. I ordered my gaskets and seals from kurt yesterday, and they are on the way. Nice guy. I'm sure I will be doing a lot more business with him.

Is there any way to tell what year t case he has with out having to open it up?

check out this page:

Cruiser Outfitters

Determining the year of a Split-Case:

Split Transfer Cases were stamped with a serial number or "build code" at the time of manufacture from the factory. Using this code, you can derive what year transfer case you actually have.
The T-case serial number is a combination of date code and serial.

The format is YMxxx
Y = Last digit of year (always going to be
M = Letter corresponding numerically to month
xxxx = Serial number of case that month

If the number on your case is 5 I 5858, that would be 1985, I=9th letter = 9th month= Sept., 5,858th case built that month

See images below for two other examples.
First is 6J4694, located at edge of PTO port, 1986 Oct. #4694
Second is 9K149, located on top of case, 1989 Nov. #149.

(Special Thanks to Jim Chenowith of TLC Performance & the Ih8mud.com community for deciphering the code and providing the pictures)

I got the transfer case installed yesterday. Everything bolted up. That hole that I was worried about was not an issue. It did not go into the trans, so it was no concern. Since the truck doesnt run right now I could not test it while driving, but I can shift into 4h and 4l and it locks the front shaft so I guess I did everything right. Thank you guys so much. I know I had a crap load of questions.

Great news to hear.

What is the idler shaft, I can't find it in the fsm... I'm going to try and pick up an 84 t-case with the tranny attached today for my 87 and I was wondering if I would have to worry about that different size. Thanks.

Idler shaft is #19.

Thanks Jim. Too bad they lied to me about the t-case WITH a tranny though. That's the last time I'm doing business with toy connection:bang:

Looks like I will be ordering a rebuild kit from Kurt and just get it done myself.

Post 13, Pic #1, shows the early location for date code. On the rear of the case beside the PTO cover.

Sometime around 86 or 87 it migrated up to the very top of the case. (Which is fokking impossible to read w/ the body on  )

Just got a transmission and transfer case. Was sure these were out of a 83 or 84. Find no markings around the PTO cover on the transfer case but has what was left of a part number sticker so thought possibly a later replacement but still 34MM idler. Cleaned the area on top of the case and found the date code. 3G 0181, which means 181 made in July of 1983. I have a May of 1984 case and it's by the PTO cover. Why this July of 83 has it on top who knows.:meh:

You sure it's not a 1993 replacement?
Later universal case castings have the oil fill plug boss cast as a figure8 so that the hole can be drilled in either location, for flat mounting or clocked mounting. Don't think they had thought of that yet in 1981-84.

It is also behind an H55, which is still rare in '83. Maybe a correlation between H55 and date code location?

That is possible, this is the only five speed I've seen in person. Off a BJ42 but posted here since five speeds are a lot more common on 60 series and most added to a 40 series later were from a 60/70 series or bought new.

Anyone have a idea how to read this production date code?

I have not seen a production date code that did not include a letter after the first number. This is attached to a post 10/85 H55F, has a 38 MM idler. This is from the Australian market and was told it was mated to a 2H.

The closest thing I've seen to a serial number on a Land Cruiser transfer case is the code with year, month and then the number it was built during that year/month.
