trans or transfer case

Yesterday I was driving home and I accelerated from traffic light and I had a noise from the trans or transfer case. I lost speed and pulled over and put it in park and it rolled in park. I had my son start engine and put it in drive while I was looking at transfer case and saw some movement. So I am thinking that the transfer gear or output shaft is some how stripped or broke?
Just wondering if anyone has seen or heard of this. Just trying to get some insight before I start digging into something I am not sure of how deep it might be?

Probably not the transmission nor the transfer case:

Tranny/transfer takes dump
Nightmare...Transfer case issues while starting from light...but drives w/ center diff locked?

Lock the center diff and see if it moves. My money is on the splines as mentioned in the posted links above.

Found snap ring in dust cap. Must be aftermarket no actual groove for it to go in Tried to upload pic from phone. No luck on that yet.

And therrs the pic lol. Got it back through with no problem. Bolt ,blue lock tire and big flat washer for ring to keep it in place. Again thks for input.
