I've got an 83 FJ60 with a t case that won't stay in 4wd.

I found a 3 speed 40 case that is rebuilt. Would this swap over to my 4 speed tranny? Any advantage or disadvantages to this case over the one I have now?

A loose traction surface which allows the front wheels while in 4WD to grab & slip & grab & slip, causing the transmission to shudder forward & back, can cause the transfer to jump out of 4WD.

Check that the transfer shift boot is not pushing on the transfer shift lever.

Check the actuation of transfer shifting while under the truck. Make sure it clicks firmly in place.

If those are fine, then the 4WD clutch sleeve teeth and front output shaft teeth may be worn... allowing them to jump out of engagement when under tension. If you replace those parts and their bearings it will stay locked.

There's nothing "wrong" with lashing the transfer lever while in 4WD with a strap to keep it in 4wd. It's just a hassle.

If the transmission or motor mounts are broken, the engine will move under load , pushing the shifter against the floor pan.

The 3 speed t-case will NOT work in your application.

I removed the tunnel cover so no levers are touching anything. Motor mount on driver side has been bolted. I replaced the tranny mount with a good used one. Also shimed the detent springs.

It's good to know that it's ok to tie it in 4wd, because that's what I'm running right now. Our club is hosting the SFWDA next weekend and I want to be able to wheel some.

I wish there was an good way to get a super low crawl ratio in these things!

Oh, there is..
