Apparently 4 out of 5 tpms failed on a recently cold day, tire shop stated they couldn't communicate with them even after dropping to 5lbs and back up to 40lbs.
They're estimate to replace all 5 was over $500, so I ordered 5 sensors (probably knock off) for $160. I took pictures on each new sensor and wrote the number down:

I'm embarrassingly slow, using my fj40 and bottle Jack to break the bead:

Old original 2008 sensor, on the original 2008 spare tire....

New tpms:

Now I'm off to try starting my old laptop with tech stream and register the right numbers.

Uhh... let us know how that works out, but so far nobody has been able to get Techstream to edit the TPMS registrations. You need a special tool, or Carista.

I like your ingenuity with getting the sensors swapped out, though. Any trouble getting the beads to re-seat? Could always go this route:

Carista module is $20 and the pro version of the app to enable TPMS editing is another $9 for a temp activation. Most cost-effective and reliable way I’ve found to handle it yet.

Yup. I have one in my Amazon wishlist, I'll be ordering when it's time to swap the summer wheels/tires back on.

Alright, tech stream is erroring out when trying to update the ID's following this guys process:
Is that the failure point expected?

What exactly am I looking at with Carista?

Oh, and I busted my extra jack... stuck in the middle and won't go up or down...

Carista app worked perfectly. Downloaded from play store and used with my cheap elm327 Bluetooth adapter (usually use torque app for cels).
Carista is offering one week trial right now.

On a separate note, looks like my old spare didn't reseat well and leaking ever so slightly.

Totally can write the new TPMS info with Techstream - just need a different cable.

Carista is very very slow (or at least their module is, unsure about other tools with that software) but the app seems to work great for TPMS coding. I’ve used it for SRS code reading/clearing as a result of removing my second row on trips too. Good product. Not really worth paying the yearly pro-level subscription though.

The beads reset without issue. I didn't even need to pull the valve stem out.
Are the valve stems replaceable on their own? Mine are not in the best shape and I’d like to change them out. When I asked my local Toyota dealer they told me I’d have to change all the TPMS to get new valve stems as it’s all attached. My TPMS work 100%.

They don't appear to be torn down and rebuilt like that.
I used the incomplete term, I meant valve stem core.

I figure the light will burn out someday and all will be fine ...

It’s most likely an LED and will take quite a while. Though I understand the sentiment.

I read somewhere that Toyota uses 0000000 for vehicles without a spare or spares without a sensor.
I'm thinking about trying that in all five fields.

For anyone doing this in the future, an alternative is to buy aftermarket sensors and program your original sensors' IDs into the new sensors. This way nothing needs to be programmed on the car itself.

I did that with my winter wheels/sensors using these items:
- sensors
- tool

Note that the links are to Amazon _Canada_.

Hold on! I bought "programmable" sensors and cloned the OEM sensor ID's into the new/programmable ones. Techstream shows the sensor ID's correctly and it even shows the pressure and temperature, BUT I'm still seeing the "Tire pressure system Error" light on the dash as well as the (un-cleanable) "Transmitter ID not Received (Main)". Any suggestion?

Haven't seen those issues before, so unfortunately can't give you a concrete solution. I don't even have Techstream - did everything with that tool I linked to above.

Try disconnecting the battery for 30 mins to reset settings?

Your tire in location 5 has a bad ID. Thats why you are still seeing an error. All "F"s is unlikely to be valid. The two codes you are getting is because of this.

On my 100 series it would go for 1 hour or 60 miles without setting an error if all IDs were valid even if one was not reading. After 60 miles I would get a TPMS ID Error.

On my 200 series it will set an error almost immediately if it cant read all IDs.
