Hi All,

Last time I put tires on the shop didn't have a TPMS programmer, so I've been driving around with the dash light on.

Does anyone know of an inexpensive tool that will work on a 2016 to read the serial numbers off the sensors, and in a perfect world program the ECM?

I've used techstream to enter them in before, but I had the serial numbers off the sensors that time. I probably still have the cable somewhere, but am not sure I still have a computer with it set up.

I'd prefer a device that reads and programs to keep it simple.

Does anyone rent these out? If not, who has the best price?

Thanks.

While I get the desire to DIY tpms, most tire stores (at least where I’m at) will do this for free at there tire pressure check stations.

This has been my experience as well.

I also don't have any recommendation for a programmer device to buy. You could check back with the shop that installed them to see if they now have a programmer and will program them for you as their customer. Alternatively, some have had luck going to Discount tire and getting them programmed as a courtesy. At the very least, they will pull IDs so that you can program them yourself if you can find your Techstream cable.

I use an Autel MaxiTPMS TS508 for all my tire needs on all my vehicles, but that is $180, so not cheap. I got it in 2019. The current model is WiFi enabled but besides that it has not changed much. They release periodic updates to bring it up to date to the newest cars.
I found it convenient for testing sensors, switching tire sets, reprograming via copy or OBDII, programing Autel sensors, resetting errors.
But if you just change tires, I'll let the shop do it.

Thank you all. Let me see if I can find a shop that will do it for me. And if that doesn't work, check out the one mentioned above.

+1 for this device. It helped me. Maybe would’ve saved me from discount tire messing up a Honda tpms sensor swap I had issues with months ago too had I had the device at that time. Lesson learned. All tire shops are not equal. Find a good one and support it.

Have you gone back to the shop to see if they have one now? Seems to me a descent shop would have one. So I would let them finished the job you probably paid to have done?

FWIW I have avoided this hassles with three different vehicles by buying fully OEM compatible sensors. No need to program, just mount and drive.

I bought a new OEM tpms for a new wheel I put in the rotation. I had to reprogram mine to accept the new fifth wheel without the light being illuminated.

Yeah, on our rigs at least the new sensors will not be auto-learned. The new IDs must be programmed into the TPMS brain.

That is also my experience with both a '13 and a '16 Land Cruiser - they need to be programmed in.

I ordered the Autel and it arrives Saturday. I'll report back if it works out for me.

I have the same one, and another vote for it. I use it twice a year on the LX and other vehicles that require a good for relearn for summer/winter/summer wheel/tire swaps. I’ve had it for at least 5 years with no issues.

Thanks for the advice all.

I got the Autel MaxiTPMS TS508WF, and it worked great.

I set up an account, registered the unit, updated the firmware, then went in to the OBD Relearn mode, scanned all 5 sensors, the plugged in the OBD cable, updated the ECU with the sensor ids, took it for a short drive and everything worked. The TPMS light is off and all five sensors are registering.
