I recently contacted my local Toyota dealership to check my vin to see if fuel tank replacement has been completed. They let me know it has not. But they needed to contact Toyota gulf states on how to proceed.

Received a call today that Toyota has a rear seatbelt campaign recall K04 campaign also and they do not make the parts anymore. So Toyota wants to make an offer on my 60. WTH?Until then they will not proceed with fuel tank replacement M01 campaign
Anyone had this happen to them?
What pricing do they use?
I believe if I turn down the offer I waive my rights for any damages on Toyotas behalf.

Sounds like dealer shenanigans.
Get whatever they are saying in writing.

tell them to suck it

If they haven't got the parts to carry out a recall I believe they're obliged to offer to buy back the vehicle.
Decline, unless you want your truck to go to the crusher.

Vehicle companies do that because they cannot honor a recall and are unable to make the vehicle compliant with required federal safety standards. I have heard of this scenario many times. It usually happens when someone goes in for the gas tank swap and they don’t have the correct hoses or can’t find the tank. They offer to buy the vehicle and get you into a new Toyota. I believe it’s law if they cannot make good on their recall warranty. Obviously you’re not obligated to sell at which point they’re not obligated to work on your vehicle.

I’ve had two fuel tank recalls done on 60s, and that took talking to somewhere around 8-10 dealerships. The impression I get is that they don’t want to be working on our old junk. Their techs slam out the same repairs on newer vehicles over and over again and it’s more profitable to streamline their operation that way. Some old truck comes in with rusty bolts and caked in oil … not a great day for them. So they use the buyback as their “out”. It’s their way of shutting you down so they don’t have to do the work.

They do have a leg to stand on here though: the fuel tank recall requires one part number which is a “kit” that contains something like 17 parts. A few of those parts are no longer available, so the “kit” part also lists as no longer available. Guess what those missing parts are? Fuel hose - the same stuff you can buy on a roll at Napa, except it’s not a Toyota part number. So they choose to wiggle out of the work based on that. “Oh the part is discontinued and we can’t do the work, we can only offer you a buyback.” Maybe there’s some legal liability or risk here since the recall deals with fuel, I don’t know. But I’ve had this excuse used as a cudgel by middle managers about half a dozen times.

Guess what IS still available? The fuel tank, the most important part of the recall.

Go find yourself a dealership who’s willing to play ball. Call around to other local dealerships, stop in in, etc, look at old Mud posts about this where folks say what dealership has done the work and see if any of those are near you. Ask local 60 owners - you might find them in the “Clubhouse” section of this forum. Once you find a dealership, find the right person on staff - maybe the lead service writer or a lead tech. They might know about this recall.

Your last ditch effort is to call Toyota NA corporate, and they might put pressure on the dealership to follow through. In the previous threads on the subject are the names and phone numbers of two people at corporate who handle this. It was a gal and the responsibility was recently handed off to some guy. 100% for certain that info is buried in a thread here.

Talked to Toyota today. Long story short is they don’t want to do the fuel tank if I take the buyback .Cruiser trash is exactly correct about the hoses and parts kit. They will have to use non oem fuel line.Toyota rep passed me onto the next guy that is goin to make the offer (2-4 business days for a phone call) but stated that they will only offer book value no money for upgrades lift tires bumpers. Pfffft…. She is staying with me for sure . But I want to hear the number so I can laugh.

Just find a dealership who will play ball or find the number for the person at Toyota corporate who can put pressure on the dealership you’re currently working with. You can get a fuel tank installed under warranty but it’s going to be some work.

Interested as I need to see about getting this done, how can i find out if my vin was ever completed?

So I got the below message, which leads me to beleive it either:

A. Was not effected, were all 1989's effected?
B. The previous owner took care of it but doesn't remember.

At this point it seems like I will not be getting anything "free" from toyota for my gas tank/system etc =(

The fuel tank for an FJ62 from Toyota is discontinued. No longer available. Only FJ60 tanks are still available.

Thanks @OGBeno I was just reading that from another thread you created. Thing is is seems it was taken care of at an earlier date. I went one step further and checked with nhtsa and it confirmed no open recalls. Should I try and call Toyota to see when it was done or at this point its wasted energy?

Frequently a 60 is worth more in stock condition on BAT than if it were modified. I'm curious what they will offer.
I suppose they wouldn't be interested in providing the new gas tank and have you or someone else do the job?

If both Toyota and the NHTSA say there aren’t any open recalls, then it’s 99.9% certain it’s been done.

Spoke with Toyota on Friday. They offered 14k . It must go through a dealer vehicle inspection if we proceed. No negotiations. This is their max offer.
