Lots of the mines in the states are above ground. Just got back from the rain forests of Costa Rica. I asked why there were so many 40s and 70s., Oscar my friend said they were the only thing that would consistantly run. They wont die he said. Lots of newer trucks parked under a tree or shed, where they had died. MIke

Of us 3rd world folks .. there is no rival for Nissan Patrol or Toyota Land Cruiser if you are talking about serious work .. mines here only 75 / 79 series .. for folks working in the mountains .. roads are getting better .. but not yet better enough to allow any NON Patrol or Land Cruiser handle the abuse .. ( that's what most of 'em take down here .. pure and constant abuse )

Few of those 75 / 79 or Patrol Pickups are people buses through the mountains .. drivers fill % of gasoline on those ( all are 1HZ or TD42 ) to get more from those engines ..

Honestly I don't see any hi lux taking that spot ..

Kinda crazy that his is going to happen.
I would love to own a dual cab down the road.
Makes me really want to preserve my 77 and 75 as much as possible.

my hzj77 just clocked 200k kms. this is sad news about the LC 70 series. what keeps the land rover going / why cant toyota do the same to the 70 series?

There has been talk about killing the Defender off as well for similar reasons. Its also lost big customers like the Australian Defence Forces.
Its also no longer in British hands last I heard,I think Tata own it now.

x3 ! exactly !!!

I'm not normally a 'glass half full' kind of guy but to me that article says that Toyota is going to keep the 70 series for at least another 5 years. That will make it the longest running Toyota model and one of the longest running models from any manufacturer, ever. It'll be 2033 before I can import a 2018 VDJ79 double cab from Aus. I'll be able to use my old age pension to pay for the oil changes. That should transport me nicely until my dirt-nap.

Looks like I'm okay. My kids will have to find something else to be obsessed with.

you got married, it can have that affect on someone ...

Hello Rosco,

In fact Tata has owned it for a while, some three years now. Back in 2009, there was some debate about the British Army relying on a foreign company for its Rovers. However, it eventually petered out.

Thanks for the update on the G-wagen. Did the Australian Defence Forces use Land Cruisers in the past?

I read somewhere they had about 2000 landcruisers ,mainly troopies but also cab chassis and 105 series.
I went to an auction once and there was some serious bidding on a 105 series that had been an admiral's personal transport.
Ive only ever seen their Landcruisers painted white as they are used for UN missions and peace keeping in the south pacific and East Timor..
They also had 214 HJ45 for a group called Norforce. They are a group of part time army reservists who operate as coast watchers using local knowledge backed with SAS training.
The SAS also used plain white 105 series during the Sydney Olympics

The 1st of the Gwagons for the aust army.I thought it was a 79 series at 1st glance.
The 6 wheelers look cool

I think these ones are in Iraq or Aghanistan
In 2010, SECDET transitioned from the ASLAV to up-armoured Landcruiser SUVs. The SUVs come in two variants – a 4.2 tonne Series 76 and the 4.6 tonne Landcruiser that the Close Personal Protection team (CPP) uses. For standard escort tasks, they place five troopers in each vehicle – a driver, commander and three operators.

In what they call a ‘motorcade’, the CPP take the diplomats or VIPs in the other, heavier Landcruisers, with the Counter-Attack Team – the troopers – in the other Series 76s. 31 March 2010

i am liking the look of those Gwagon 6 wheelers ... getting ideas again.

What would they cost though? I bet you would have no change from a $100000

I am not even a LC owner and this is very disturbing news to me. Mainly because I see so many, and I'll just say it, Really cool and Really great looking Jeep Wranglers and 4-door JK's that I just can't understand why Toyota doesn't see a demand for 70-series Cruisers state side... :frown: It's my little wet dream that one day Toyota will offer the 70-series here and then I'll sell everything I have and buy one on the spot. ....But news like this just crushes my fantasy. :frown:

I would like to see that beefed up and diesel powered

Toyota doesn't think so unfortunately. I can't help but feel confident in their decision as they certainly must have a really good reason to not offer all the great options in the US. I guess diesels are just too "dirty" for Americans :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Thanks for sharing the article. Wished I hadn't seen it!
