I have an 83 FJ60 and it has a white (I think) emblem on the grill. Someone spray painted and I want to bring it back to original. I got most of the paint off it, but I can't figure out if it is supposed to be all one color or 2 different shades. Is is white or off white? My whole truck was rattle canned with camo paint and I am slowly getting it off. It has been a very laborious task but I think it is worth it to try and save every emblem and part so I can keep it as original as possible.

Here is a 34 year old patina'd grill emblem side by side with a brand new OEM emblem.

Thank you, this is very helpful. I will have to figure out a way to tape it so I can repaint it.. It is going to be a tedious process..I may just buy another... LOL

Call me tedious.

I hope everyone had a good Memorial Day Weekend. No BBQs for us, or road trips for us. Three full days of assembly for us. A bunch of parts finally came in so we can start putting some polished, painted or refurbished parts on the fresh paint.

While my wife was working on a different project (We will see it below) I decided to tackle the front emblem. I think it's not surprising that we're spending a pretty penny on the finishing of this Land Cruiser, but like anybody I enjoy saving a little money. The front Toyota emblem is a bit of an enigma. You could go buy a new one for over 100 dollars which will just get stone chipped and messed up. I decided to give ours a refresher. I think it turned out alright. First thing I did was sand the letters flat and then painted the whole emblem white and started masking off the letters.

Finished off the letters

Put a good couple coats of trim black over it all and then pealed off the masking

It turned out pretty good. Maybe a little brush work to make it real nice, but from 3 feet it looks pretty solid.

The reproduction grill needed a little work to fit, but it's a quality piece none the less. New turn signal lenses and gaskets. Was great to see the front of the truck come together.

Looks great. I was going to mask and paint the black, but I may as well paint the white. I think it is an off white color. Not sure if it is supposed to be pure white. Any thoughts?

Look into a spray mastic. Where you spay the whole thing cut out what you want to paint, paint then peel the rest off. Auto body paint supply should carry it.

I have a few tips if you're interested, I painted mine to color-match my 100 series. It may not be a 60 but it is the same emblem

Spray Mastic? Do you have a name of a brand? I can't find it anywhere. That would be a great solution instead of masking the whole thing...

just going to toss this idea out there. I'd spray the entire thing white first and let it dry. Then apply some type of barrier (vaseline etc) to the interior portion of the letters you want to keep white. Id then respray it black and wipe off the Vaseline with a rag. May not be perfect but I bet it'll look alright and be one of the cheapest options.

It is not very hard to tape it. I used an exacto knife to cut the edges. I decided not to spray mine white because I wanted the used look on my emblem. I did spray it satin black and it looks good. I wish I had sprayed it closer to a dark gray.

so for you that have bought grill emblems what part number have you used? i see part number 75311-90k00 which always looks white on the computer screen and 75316-90a00 which always looks a little more cream colour. it this possibly why some of you are finding that the new badge is whiter than your original? i can’t seem to find a good answer as to what the difference is and i don’t trust colour judgments on computer screens!!

for example ...

I believe the reason they have all aged to that funky off white colour is that they were originally an early form of retro-reflective coating. At least when mine was new (35 years ago) and you hit it with a spotlight (or headlights) the TOYOTA lit right up in blaze white!

ok i think i found my answer from a technical stand point. the 75316-90a00 is the 60 series part number. the 75311-90k00 is the 70 series part number. beyond that i can’t see how they are different. can anyone expand on that?

edit: so on a little more research and questioning apparently the 70 series emblem is a little larger and has a flatter mounting surface than the 60 series. most guys that go with custom steel flat faces grilles apparently use the 70 series which is the 75311-90k00 part number. that’s what i bought today. hope i’m happy when it gets here
