It sais it's for a 2002 pickup option not sure if that means it won't bolt up to a 91 fj80. Maybe just different engine mounts? I'm pretty sure the engine to trany just bolts up to my a440 bell housing. Not sure about torque converter. If that'll work or I would need a one that comes with a diesel dew to stall speed?

There are some threads on here about doing the 1HD FTE swap into an 80 series LC.

RHD to LHD 1HD FTE

Yes it will fit.
Will it be a basic bolt in fit? Yes and No. Not quite.

Been done loads of times around the world. There's good threads detailing what needs to be done

You'll have to figure wiring harnesses, ecu, dash instruments, gearbox compatibility, crossmember, drive shafts, fuel lines . . .

You have more guts them me :p no way I would bay a used Eng. off E-Bay 🤷‍♂️

Also, the HD family of diesel engines do not share common engine mounting points with the 3FE found in the 62 and early 80. So you'll need to add that to your list of problems to be tackled.
Oh snap! So what's a direct diesel replacement for a fj80 with the 3fe? I'd like to make this as simple as possible. Keep the tranny and t case, just an engine swap. Is it the 12h or the 1hz? Isn't the 1hz just the 1hd with no turbo? Wait maybe not there both 4.2l though right? I just read some where that a 1hz with a turbo makes more power then a 1hd-t. Idk?

Don’t touch a 1HDFTE then. It’s not a swap for someone who wants an “easy swap”. Wiring alone is beyond even most shops.

Cheers

You know the a diesel section right.

If you really want a diesel sale the gaser and buy a diesel.

If you think you 3FE is slow what tell you try a diesel 🤣🤷‍♂️

Haha never have yet either. Just was looking to see how much a 1ht was going for these days n found that. Kinda wish I jumped on a vortex swap 3 to 4 years ago when u could find engin n tranny combos with computer for 3k on ebay. I think I'd rather have the 1hd-t instead of the fte anyway because of it being simpler n no computer. Anyway I'm on my second 3fe now since I had a parts cruiser n my old one blew up. Once this one go's I'm definitely getting a toyota diesel for it.

Haha yeah I've been looking at cars from Japan. If Iwas going to do that it'd have to be a manual triple locked with a fridge council and those are getting a bit pricy these days like around 30k. Is there a better place to get one? Or a rhd one from somewhere else? I've read people here talking about some Dave guy in the mother land but those posts were from like 08

Rodger that. What's the easiest toyota diesel to swap into a 91 fj80 with the 3fe and A440 Trans? I heard the 1hd-t will bolt up to bell housing but engine mounts need to be relocate. Is that still the easiest. Probably the best either way.

Oh and yeah I've heard the 1fz is faster then the 1hd-t but I have the 3fe! Haha u even think there's a incline u better get that puppy up to 10 over the speed limit 🤣 otherwise it's downshifting. My newer engine is doing a bit better then the older 3fe I had in because this one had regular oil changes and it's got the smog delete n little better fuel injectors. I had those in the old one too but in this one it seems to help a tiny bit. There is no way to get more power out of a 3fe that makes any sense. (Other than a cat delete). I've read about people putting cams in em or even long stroking it with a 4.2 2f block all to get hardly noticeable changes for the money. The diesels I've read you can get it intercooled 3 inch exost turn fule up a tiny bit and maybe increase boost a bit n it makes a big difference. While still getting good fule economy vs the 9-10mpg u get with a gasser.

Agreed, except for the slow part. I've owned FJ62's and an HDJ81 and the 1HD-T is a monster by comparison. Acceleration and hill pulling capabilities are quite respectable, even in a 5400lb Cruiser. A bit of tweaking and it was even better. Loaded down with an off-road trailer, 2x RTT's and four people with all their camping gear the 81 would still cruise easily at 75mph and pull hills at 65+.

Some of the other Toyota diesels, though...that's a different matter.

The issue with using the stock transmission is that the diesels came with different transmission internals and torque converters. I've heard that the gas engine spec transmission isn't happy hooked to a diesel, though I don't have personal experience with that.

A stock 1HD-T is a fairly good match for a 1FZ, a mildly tuned one is way better IMO. Just for giggles, here are the results from some dyno runs on a bunch of Cruisers. Check out the difference between the three 1FZ's and the 1HD-T. All engines were in stock form.

Also, if you're looking for an easy swap I would not recommend the engine in the eBay link you posted. That one is a 1HD-FTE, which means it is an electronically controlled diesel that will require a full engine harness and ECU to run. You'll be much better off finding a 1HD-T or 1HD-FT.

I also don't think you can just bolt a diesel in front of a 3FE's A440F. I think I've read the valving and clutch packs are different even between the gas and diesel transmissions.
Yeah I was hoping it would just need a tc from a diesel n maybe just play with the throttle pressure cable to change shift points a little?

Right. I'll be looking for the 1hd-ft since the 1hd-t has that bearing issue. Get it intercooled with 3 inch exost happy days

Nice! Looks like way more torque in the diesel. I'm surprised to see some of those low hp numbers for the fz. I wonder what my 3fe has on the Dyno.
