The Toyo Open Country HT tires on the GX I just bought will need replacing in the not too distant future. They have around 45,000 mostly highway miles on them and are very evenly worn. Not sure if the owner rotated them or not. I love Toyo tires and wouldn't consider another brand.

FOr the replacement set, I could simply go Toyo Open Country HT again, but remember that I had put the very tough Toyo M55 tires on my Dodge 3/4 ton truck and slide in camper. I was envisioning long road trips partly on gravel roads up north, and did not want to have to worry about the tires in the slightest. The M55 sure gives that confidence. THey sing a bit on the highway, which wasn't too much of an issue in the Cummins Dodge, but I'm thinking it may affect the otherwise quiet ride of the GX.

I suppose another option if I want something that can handle marginal (gravel) roads and highway would be their Open Country AT 2.

Anybody have experience with either of these tires (OP AT 2 and M55) on their GX trucks (or 4Runner)?

I run the OP AT2 Xtremes. They run very smooth, but do make noise. I had Hankook Dynapro ATM's before these. They're a bit more mild, and near dead silent on the road, yet still a nice looking tire. I would recommend those for your needs.

Toyo tires are some of the best tires you can get IMHO. I have had a set of Open Country ATs and a set of AT 2 Extremes on my Tundra. The first set lasted 60k miles with lots of towing and occasional aggressive driving. They are fantastic on road, and have helped me pull trailers through mud holes, I never thought I would get through. The compounds are also great on rocks. I have a family member thats been in the tire business for over 15 years, and he thinks very highly of Toyo. The only reason I don't have Toyo MTs on my GX is i saved about 100 bucks per tire with my Coopers. Oh, and Toyo owns Nitto, the Nitto Trail Grapplers are lesser version of the Toyo MT.

I wasn't implying they are a bad quality tire by any means. They're becoming more and more common as OE tires, I know Infiniti is using them. Just saying they're not as common on trail rigs.

Thanks guys, yes I can appreciate that Toyo aren't as widely used as other brands.
Glad to hear about your good experience with them USK56.
I think the choice for me will be between the Toyo Open Country ATs or HT's (latter more for straight highway driving and what's on the truck now, with 45,000 miles and counting). Glad to hear you had good experience with the AT's, I mean lean that way.
And yes, there are cheaper brands out there, but peace of mind and knowing I can get 50,000 miles with the Toyos means a lot.
Those Toyo M55's I had put on my Dodge 3/4 ton truck were one tough tire, used a lot by hydro and logging companies who drive in the bush and on gravel roads all the time. But maybe a little "too tough" for the GX, the AT may be a good compromise.
Cheers!

p.s. What cooper tires are you using on your GX USK56? how are they wearing?

I have Cooper STT Pros in a 285/70/17. I have put a bit over 5,000 miles on them. About 350 miles of that has been dirt/gravel roads and trails. They are showing very little wear, especially for a mud tire.

If you are going to be on "marginal (gravel) roads and highway" most of the time getting a mud tire or an all terrain tire may just burn extra fuel. One thing to consider is the weight of the tires effects gas mileage.

My Toyo A/T IIs Extremes are:
10 ply tires
really heavy
have deeper treads with lots of space between lugs compared to most AT tires
will last me 65,000 miles with ~20% of that towing equipment, 2% of it off road
The main reason I have them on my Tundra is for their durability and load carrying capacity.

I understand. I didn't take it that you were implying that Toyos are bad, and I also hope I didn't come across as if I was knocking Nitto. The funny thing about Toyo and Nitto, is their situation is kinda like Chevy and GMC. They are really the same, but not? Toyo being the main company just saves some of the better tread designs and compounds for themselves. The biggest difference between them is their marketing.

If not really using them off road, the Toyo AT2 Xtremes are not a good idea. Other than the points made above, about weight and such, they also make a lot of noise for an All Terrain. They're as loud as the Fierce Attitude Mud tires I've run. Very loud for an All-Terrain, although certainly not as loud as the typical Mud Terrains (the Fierce was barely more than an AT).

Thanks for all the replies folks. Indeed an agressive AT tire may not be the best idea for my use, for reasons indicated. A good set of highway Michelins or Toyos (such as the HT's on there now) are probably the best bet. Cheers.

3 ply sidewall on the Toyo 2's?

Toyo AT2s on my GX... they balanced easily and are very quiet on road. Excellent traction aired down off road.

Can you please post pics of your truck with those wheels on it? I love those wheels and have been wondering how they'd look on a GX.

Also in regard to tires, I've been reading so much good stuff about the new Falken AT3/W, newer tire tech, quiet, grippy, durable, etc. Definitely give them some consideration.

I'll put some pics in a build thread soon...

Thanks for the pics of the AT2s on your GX.
I probably won't be able to get the size to fit, but part of me would love to put Toyo M-55's on my GX, the tires used by logging and hydro companies to drive in the bush and gravel roads, tough as nails. Sing a bit on the highway, which is why I'm thinking it may not be the best solution for me, given the quietness of the GX and that I'll be driving primarily on pavement. I used to have a set on a Cummins diesel truck, so the tire noise was kind of drowned in the engine noise. Then again, maybe the extra soundproofing of the GX would make the M-55's almost silent inside, with the windows up...

Every one of the 17" will fit a GX with a lift. I didn't see anything big enough for my liking :P
