Hi I'm planning to towbar a FJ40 about 300 miles this weekend. It currently has a "lincoln locker" in the rear diff. What's the best procedure? Should I disconnect the rear driveshaft? Also one wrecker told me that he always puts the tranny in high gear and keeps the clutch in ( with a stick jammed between the clutch and seat) to keep the oil moving in the tranny for a long haul. Does this sound plausible? Any general suggestions regarding this matter is appreciated.

Thanks.

Welcome.

If you remove the rear drive shaft, and you unlock your lockouts isolating the front wheels from the front axle shafts, you will not have to worry about the transmission or transfer case getting proper lubrication or rotating while you are towing.

^X2! Just did that earlier this month from north of Green Bay back to Chicago. Disco'd the rear DS and had my hubs unlocked. No issues and my 40 tracked extremely well behind my FJC.

EDIT: I don't know about the "Lincoln Locker" but the rear of my 40 is Aussied and it didn't cause any problems.

Don't sweat the locker.

I have flat towed thousands of miles with the rear driveshaft installed, and the tranny and transfer in neutral. No problems.

If it wants to wander, you need more caster, (the steering geometry that in part promotes return to center). Since you have a locker, you may have a lift/larger tires, and this can affect how the truck will flat tow.

Just be sensitive, test it out in low traffic areas and be careful and you should be fine.
