Why would there be a clean out to the rear of your yard?

Septic tanks would be closer to your house

City sewer connections are in the back?
It is common to put a clean out before you connect to city sewer.

Just trying to figure out what a clean out would be doing there. (I’m assuming the shed you mentioned is closer to the rear of your lot for some reason)

Listen to this s***...

So over the past couple months I’ve noticed kinda a sewer smell when grabbing yard tools/mower/stuff from our shed. The wife did t notice it and just thought I was ‘smelling things’. This shed is quasi attached to the back side of our house and was ‘built’ by the PO. I chalked it up to nothing...for a while...but kept smelling this ‘smell’.

I ended up crawling under the house to check the main plumbing stack intending to likely find a leak. Nothing, no leaks, no issues. I chalk it to maybe smelling something from somewhere else.

Today I was doing some stuff in the yard and when walking by the shed I notice what looked like a hint of wet dirt where the shed subfloor meets the ground. Told myself I’d investigate later...later I walked by it again and notice a decent sized wet spot in the mulch downgrade from the shed.

I recalled the PO mentioning there was a clean out under the shed, which didn’t make much sense to put one there (shed or clean out)...so I cut out a section of the shed floor where I thought the clean out should be...holy fock. Picture speaks for itself...

I’ve spent the past 4 hours cleaning out the shed and then started to tear it down. We experience no plumbing issues inside the house, no backups, nothing so I’m guessing maybe the shed has settled and cracked the main line and it’s leaking. Won’t know until I beat the shed out of the way.

Positive is that I’ve always hated this jerry rigged shed and now have a great reason to get rid of it and build a new one in another spot.

This is a worthwhile rant.

Demo’ing a shed in this weather (direct sun all day) was fun. Dig a hole and found this...

Looks like it was hooked up to sewer after the fact. The stub headed toward the right is likely the old line headed to the septic. It making that turn makes me think that it probably goes around the corner of the house and then likely heads toward rhe sewer which is probably in the street out front.

I cant believe they would have put the shed right on top of the cleanout like that. That was no bueno.

You’re smart!! Everything you assumed is accurate. And no shed will be going back here fo sho!

Finished and tested with...well, yeah.

Glad you got it all straightened out.

I'd say pull up a stool and enjoy your handiwork, but it sounds like you've already done that

How many showers did you take after this? Impressed by your quick work, but gagging in sympathy.

Let us not celebrate in haste...i believe we have a blockage. Woke up this morning to a toilet flush that made a funny sound from another bathroom and then noticed water leaking down my new clean-out...one reason to NOT glue the cap on your clean-out so that if it backs up then you will see it (likely) before your shower fills up with turds.

But to your question...2 and a load of dishes and well...yeah. But that was last night...this morning I got to the office way early and people were like 'what are you doing here'...sorry can't talk. :flush:

Blockage caused by dirt in the line due to it being opened?

Was the sewer main broken at that street wye or was it just open?

My guess is that it's a backup of 'solids' that must have dried out after the water was draining back out the crack...or there was a blockage down grade of the 'y' which then caused the 'liquids' to drain back up that broken piece. Who knows.

Got a plumber coming out tonight to run a camera and auger through the line. Fingers crossed I don't have to dig any more holes.

Well, you can get a good look at a T-Bone by sticking your head up a butcher's ass... wait, no it has to be your ass... shut up Richard.

Fuuuuuck :censor:

Was able to get the line to drain but when running the camera through the line we found about a 8’ section of belly in the line b/w the house and the street. So...I’ll be having (not me) 10’ of line replaced. It’s only like 4’ deep, lol. I’m sure it won’t be cheap, probably 2-3 40 series parts trucks at least. I’m determined to not have to deal with this s*** again.

Unlike, but man that stinks (pun intended). Well at least after this you should be in pretty good shape.

If your feeling froggy, have a valve installed between the house and the Y, then make you a threaded cap for the clean-out with either an air chuck or pressure washer adapter on it. That should make future issues easy to clear, just make sure you close that valve before flushing...

Trying to envision this. I’m guessing it would be a monster valve? I really like the idea...blast the s*** out!

Got the quote. $1450. Very very reasonable.

Glad it didn't turn out costing a s***-ton!

He had to do something, we almost forgot about his worthless butt so he had to stir the pot again.
