My neighbor just came over asking if I had a way to get an axle nut un-peened on his Subie. I remember struggling with the same thing on my Subie, probably the most trouble in that bearing job. I may be doing one soon, thinking I'll make something out of tool steel. Is there a tool for this? (not my pic, something from the net)

Impact air gun and the appropriate socket. It will spin right off.

I've always just used an impact on these. And a new nut going back on most of the time.

There's one made for Toyotas, but I ground an old door pin into the proper shape for my own use.

Just hitting it with an impact wrench will often pull threads off the axle. The nut should be replaced either way.

That is my concern, and my cheap impact wrench didn't turn his off. I guess I'll make something, maybe a few different sizes.

I buzz it off with and impact, but since yours is too weak bust out the breaker bar or your least favorite screw driver. Lol

I've never had an issue with a staked nut damaging the threads when just using an impact to take it off.

If the vehicle is on the ground, put a socket with a big breaker bar on the nut. Have someone sit in the car and stand on the brakes while you loosen the nut. It'll come loose.

I use a 3/16" punch that I bought at Horrible Freight. I sharpened it just a little bit to put a bevel on the tip. "Works wicked ahhsome"
