Do you have a stock oil pressure gauge?
If so did you plug the wire onto the nipple on the bottom ofthe oil sending unit?

I assume it's stock. I did not remove the wire but will check to see it wasn't bumped or dislodged.

Thanks,

Harry

40 work

Hey All,

So I spend that few weeks cleaning up the 40 I bought from Dave B.

I did:

-Man-A-Fre Header 6-1 and custom exhaust
-complete tune up
-cleaned up the electrical, and got all the light working
-cleaned up the desmog...she's running like a top now!
-nstalled fluid head riser (but can't get the plate to seat nicely-it's leaking-so I disconected it for now)
-Undercoated using Fluid Film-this stuff is awsome...and the can's have a mighty spray, so you can really
get all the nooks...
-installed a ton of stainless hardware
-installed seat belts
-sor seat covers
-oil change/fluids changed

Fun stuff!

Pics of exhaust attached. The local shop did a stellar install...kept it high and tight...

Need some help. Seems like a stupidly easy problem but I just can't figure it out....

I've replaced the shoes on the parking brake drum. Old ones were shot, non functional and coated with 20 years of grease.

Problem is I can't get the parking brake drum cover back onto the rear of the xfer case spline. I have the pads and the assembly in place but the pads won't fit inside the drum.

I slide the drum on but the pads are too spread out and hit the inner edge of the cover so the cover remains 2 inches out from it's proper resting spot.

Can't tell if the auto parts store sent me the wrong size pads? I feel the drum should just slide on easily. the pad and spring assembly as it is mounted is a bit loose but this doesn't really explain it.

I have the adjuster set to the tightest setting so the adjuster isn't the problem.

Thinking I just have the wrong pads though they look similar to the ones that were on it (I threw out the old ones.

Anyone have any ideas? I've spent 3 hours on a 5 minute step and I'm pissed off at this point. Thanks in advance!

Pics. Not sure if they will help at all.

If you look just above the adjuster, you can see the size of the gap from the shoe edge to the rim. At the bottom, the edge is much closer. Still, they seem to be too big. Wondering if my springs are too weak? wrong shoes?

Bet someone with a tiny bit of mechanical aptitude could fix it in a second. Guess that's the appeal of tinkering on these old beasts.

Hey John, two things based on the pics. The right shoe doesn't look set right, I see some gaping at the bottom like its not set so the half circle is resting correctly against the pins. Looks almost like it needs to move up. That could just be the pic angle too.....but The second thing I see is it almost looks like you have the ebrake on some....the lever looks pretty far in towards the center. Did you back off the adjustment inside the truck? I've only done one ebrake set up like this so maybe someone will have more to say or say I'm totally wrong, but figured I'd tell you what I see. When I did the set up that lever was much closer to the shoe so it did not open the shoes at all.

John, it's not possible that you've installed the correct shoes upside down is it?
I could see myself doing that.

The entire drum was upside down from normal when I got it. Seems to be the only way the cable could reach the mounting point on the firewall. It arrived in my driveway that way. If the cable came out the other side, it wouldn't work due to the length.

X2 on that shoe not sitting completely against the pin and being the issue with everything hanging up. Now I'm not familiar with this setup but on old drum brake setups that I used to repair this would be a result of the e-brake cable being adjusted to much and holding the shoes open.

Just put the cruiser into long term storage for the winter. Bumma. Changed all the fluids-oil, trans, tc, diff. Fill-up and fuel stabilizer. Disengaged the ebrake and chocked the tires. Battery on maintainer. Windows open. Sealed the air filter opening to keep the meeses out. What did I forget?

Disconnected and packed up a half dozen parts to be rebuilt/repainted over the winter.

So I realized that the inspection sticker is do this month and since I have both O2 sensors in hand I'll go out to the garage to change them out.

Not that bad a job once you make your own SST and get the interior out of the car. WTF where they thinking.

Test fitted the new 5 speed knob on my 4 speed. What a busy day wrenching. I'm tired.

Parking brake 4, Flipper 0

I took it all apart and put it back together again the right way. The pads STILL don't fit. Wasted many hours on this stupid thing. Should be easy. Buying SOR pads tonight. No idea what these are that are on it but they are too big to fit in the drum. Urge to kill.....rising.......

UPDATE:' Realized the parking brake cable is frozen and won't allow the mechanism to seat the shoes properly on the pivot point. Dumb dumb dumb
