Getting ready to finish hanging stuff on the 2F: Water pump, inspection cover, etc... Can I get a consensus whether or not you use RTV (either Permatex Black or Grey) and Gasket, or just a gasket alone....
And if you've had any leaks with or without the RTV ??
Never been a real fan of anything made by Permatex. The stuff I've been using for years is called "fujibond". Its grey, and I know the local Subaru dealer will have it for under 20 bucks.
Even the shop manuals recommend that you use some sealant in conjunction with the gasket. Permatex is a good brand and industry standard.
On the ex. ports of the manifold gasket and other high heat applications I would use K&W copper coat.
BTW the inspection cover will not seal. I would not use any type of goo on it. Get some thin foam with adhesive on one side to put in there if you are concerned.

If you mean the clutch cover as the "inspection cover" it is not made to contain leaks. If oil comes from there, it's either from the motor or the transmission. Don't even try and seal it.
If you mean the pushrod cover, in my experience of doing it once, a light coat of permatex gray is the bomb. I have heard that the "Right Stuff" is even better. I think it's a polyurathane product. I've never used it, but want to try it.
i use the "high temp" orange RTV sillycone on everything.
I dont bother with the blue stuff or anything else anymore. its a few cents more for the tube but its "o2 sensor safe", high temp, good sealer, oil resistant, ect. why not use it. Never had any problems
