So I finally called up Eldorado Sand Blasting here in SD thanks to a referral from Mike of West Coast Cruisers about my used Hanna bumper.
So they quoted me sight unseen, so no guarnatees $65-$85 just to Sand Blast it clean so I can rattle can it. Or $145-$185 Blasted and Powder coated my choice of color. I was expecting much higher prices so this is a pleasant surprise.

Im sure they're tossing it in the line with other black items. That's a good price. I would have it coated and screw rattle canning it for that price. Rattle can it in a year from now when your scratch the powder coating off.

No idea about the pricing, but wouldn't a good powdercoat last longer? Pay for quality the first time.

powdercoating rocks and if you get a flat or semi flat color, you can touch it up with spray paint, that is a very good price

Hmmm. Only a hundred bucks more for powder coating? Doesn't seem right.

I still say rattle can. You can pick the color, touch up is easy and you can do it anytime you feel like doing it (i.e.: after every run).

Yeah, I was shocked at the price myself and I explained to him it had a tire carrier and nerf side protection. He did say bring it by tho for an exact estimate. Maybe he is giving me a discount since I dropped Mike's name?

Now I need to score some bolts to mount it and the license plate holder/pipe from Ken and figure out the exhaust part of it.

Hang in there Reid, maybe somebody else will vote rattle can, raising the total votes to 2:flipoff2:.

I get every thing I can powdercoated. As long as you choose the correct shade, you will be able to touch up the powdercoat with a rattle can if you so choose.

The secret to powdercoating is to get as much done at once as possible. There is usually a minimum charge. So one part costs as much as twenty.

HA!

Come on rattle can . . . only 5 votes behind (at time of posting).

Rattle can it if you only plan on keeping it for a year or so. If you hate rust (seems so since you are willing to sandblast it) I would definintely go powder coat. The finish will be about 10 times thicker and no matter how good you rattle can it it will rust much sooner. Like others have said before I go with the semi flat finish and Krylon semi flat black spray paint matches almost perfect for touch ups of the rock rash.

Well I plan to go Gray because black just wouldn't look right on my rig so that's the whole reason I want to even Sand Blast it. Then finding out that Powder coat is just another $100 it kinda seems like a no brainer. I know gray will make it tough to touch-up but at least it will look good till' I visit Moab.

Mark, remember you are in the mecca of "Bling My s***" folks!

Get that thing anodized!

In all honesty, look into it!

Kind of hard to believe at those prices after they actually see it especially with something other than black since they’re going have to clean their equipment like twice when switching colors. That and getting the "gray" color match you want might be challenging but if they can delivery for that price go for it.

I used a good air sprayer and automotive enamel customed mixed gray on my 4x4 labs DIY and it turned out really nice. Was ~ $45 for the pint, primer, supplies.. with the 3 coats its plenty thick. Scaped the s*** out of it at Moab, Rubicon, etc but its easy to touch/up match and I can always get more paint at my local place if needed; basically same color as my flares, trim, front slee bumper.

Powder coating qualitiy can vary widely from what I've seen. My ARB bumper on my other truck is all faded, discolored in some spots and not looking that good after ~ 4yrs. The slee powder coating looks really good so far on the shotbus front but I've scraped quite a bit off near the corners and need to retouch.

Yeah, I think I am going to dust off the bumper and start taking it apart this weekend and swing by the shop for an exact price.

That's why I went to a referred shop and I saw three coated axles at Mikes shop. And Mike, even told me he guessed it would be $200 max to get it coated by Eldorado.

I'm surprised nobody has suggested going Herculiner or Line-X on that bumper (or Durabak for a smooth finish). You want thick? That's as thick as you're going to get. Can reapply right over old applications too for touch-ups. It is what I am doing...

Yeah, that would be too much liner. I already have the bottom half lined. Oh and I wouldn't consider Durabak smooth especially after 4 coats.

I just realized another thing last night while I was trying to fall asleep, I better cut the whole now for the Slee receiver hitch assembly if I am going to powder coat it. Hopefully Slee can send me dimensions or a template for the hole since I don't have the $200 right now to buy it.

I have that info somewhere. I'll see if I can dig it up.

BTW: I also have a cover plate for the hole if you want it. The plate came with my bumper.

You know, now that I think of it, I don't think dimensions were given. I think I traced the hole in the Slee bumper onto the cross member and cut it out, but ended up cutting out the whole area (holes and all).

The cover plate should give you an idea of where to cut.
