Got 255/85-16 Toyo MT, Load E yesterday, now i have them on 8x16 black steel om my 87 Diesel Xtra.
They are unexpected big(since all this rubber company cheet like hell).
I have good expieriences with 315/70-17 Toyo Mt´s, thatswhy i choose them over the only other brand(BF) witch sells 255 over here.
The tire only shows you a wide for the wheel about 7 or7,5inch, so with my 8 inch the look a bit like a ........baloon. No problem. They perform well and quit.

I'm very close to throwing down on a set of KM2 255/85/16s and new set of Pro-Comp steelies.

Any feed issues/ feed-back on running them on 8" rims? From the specs, the 255 width seems pretty narrow, and I don't want my set-up to look old skool veedub...

These are Treadwright (BFG casings) 315-75/16s on 16x7 wheels. I certainly wouldn't go wider for 255s. :eek:

I arrived home tonight to a fresh set of 255/85/16 BFG KM2s in the driveway....life is good! :bounce::bounce:


Update: had them mounted up, very impressed how quite they are. On par with the Duratrac's on my Hundy. And much quieter than the BFG ATs I ran years ago on my K5. Handled fine @ 32psi.

33/1050-15 on a 15x8 vs a 325/60-15 on a 15x12. Both are BFG MTs, the 33s are the newer version KM2. Roughly 3" of lift.

These handled good on the road, but they gripped every rut and wash bad enough to have to two-hand the steering wheel at times.

These seem are better so far, except the larger sidewalls are highly noticable to me when passing at highway speed.

Sorry for the amount of pics, but it's the same truck, with the same amount of lift, but at opposite ends of this tire discussion. I prefer the short fat ones on the road, and the tall skinny ones off the road. I could go where ever I wanted with the short fat tires, but I haven't pushed the 33s near as far and hard as I have those others.
 
As others have written, terrain determins the tire.
I am on rocky or snowy and sometimes muddy roads. I went with 235/85/16s and have been happy with the traction and fuel economy. The diffs have a little more lift which helps over obstacles. The narrow tread sinks to where it can find traction.

Bi-directional "GI" type tires were a consideration. They are still made in 16" at 7.5 and 9 inch. They are superb on muddy and rocky roads but are loud on the highway and not to good on wet pavement. I have a set of 7.5X 20s on a 1942 Chevrolet 4X4 which does not exceed 40 MPH.
 
In my searching I am only finding MT's in 255/85-16. Has anyone seen an AT in this size?

Are these tires slightly taller than my current 285/75-16's? I will be running 95% hwy and 5% fire roads so tall and skinny may be the ticket.

Toyo has the M55 in that size.

The bias ply gets a lot of flack for being "old technology", but I'm willing to try them out first hand and make that decision myself. Does anybody have any recent experience with tall bias ply tires on an expedition rig? These discussions usually divert off to "my buddy's buddy ran bias tires on his trailer and hated them", and really miss the point.

I use them on my 60 and they are size 7.50 R16. I have used them both on and offroad. I mostly do highway driving (90%) and honestly they were a big improvement over the old radials (32 11.5 R15) that I had on there. In terms of expedition like use, when I do go offroad its on USFS/BLM roads and trails. I sometimes have a 4 people and a few hundred pounds of gear. They are awesome in those conditions. I've been using the tires for just a summer so my experience is limited but, no blowouts and they are old so I'm due to replace them. I bought the splits and bias ply together this spring. I'll be getting some new bias ply tires for them because they are good for what I need. I have experiences some highway wandering but little to no flatspotting. Sorry for the rambling response, but I hope it helps.
