I'm ordering new stock Toyota 15" wheels for my 1977 FJ40 and curious what size tires will give me a good look--similar to the original/stock look. I don't want too small to look goofy, or too large since this FJ hasn't been raised in any way. I'm also interested in what brand tires anyone would recommend. I see a lot of photos with BFGoodrich's on them. I don't want a whimpy look, nor do I want a big, mud look either. Thanks for the help!

30x9.50R15 will be pretty close, also cheap and plentiful. You can fit a 31x10.50R15 on it with stock springs as well. I'd stay away from the stock 225/75R15 unless you plan on driving real slow -

works out roughly to be the same size as a 225/70-15 tire or a 215/80-15 tire. the 225/70-15 tire is 27.4 inches tall and 8.9 inches wide and the 215/80-15 tire is 28.6 inches tall and 8.5 inches wide

I went with Goodyear Wranglers in a 235/75 R 15. My 40 is all original and I really like the look of them. I think the tires look great and the fender openings are really balanced with the 235's. I like the Wrangler tread too. Not to aggressive but there is tread if I need it.

Origanal tire on my 78 was a dunlap h78-15 snow cruiser. (still have 3) modern camparable is the 235/75 15

Great! I've learned a lot about tires today. Pretty much came to the same conclusion that unless I want to spend a fortune, the 30x9.5s will work just fine. And based on the photos sent, they'll have the look I want. Thanks very much for all the help!

I have 33x9.5 BFG Mud Terrains on mine. They replaced BFG All Terrains, 10.5's (I believe). They are on stock wheels with hubcaps. I really like the look of the narrow tire and there is a very noticeable improvement in handling. The truck doesn't want to wander nearly as much. The 33's fit very nicely under my stock suspension.

I just put on 30X9.5X15 and they look good. Had 31X10.5X15 on it.

Thanks everybody...I just realized yesterday that the "MudDawgs" that are on the vehicle, are on 16" wheels, and are 31x10.5x15 tires. So I might try switching one over the the OEM stock wheels just to see what that looks like. I really don't like the fatter, mud tread, but they're almost new tires.
