Ok, so i have been thinking of cheap ways of carrying my spare tire. I am too cheap for a $1000 rear bumper carrier combo. I hate my tire on my roof rack so i have come up with an idea and wanted to bounce off of ya'll. I have a spare tire carrier from a early Fj40 (not the tube carrier) that is like this one Specter Off-Road-Land Cruiser Parts - Page 142-Spare Tire Carrier (#7) and i was thinking of mounting that to my lift gate (top part) and carry my tire there. Now i would also plan on replacing the lift struts to a more heavy duty one to hold the weight of the tire. Do ya'll have an idea of what i am trying to accomplish?

Yes?

The weight of that tire bouncing on your lift gate will destroy it in no time. And you'll never find struts that stong. Even if you did, the supports on the gate and the body wouldn't take the load.

what about putting it on the lower part of the tailgate?

I am not an engineer, but from what I have seen of that part, you would destroy it in no time at all.

I know that you don't like the tire on the roof and none of us want them under the vehicle messing up ground clearance and possible messing up the tire on a rock, but if you don't find a way to mount that to the bumper then you just need to stick it inside the rig. Sucks a lot, but that is what we did for the many years that we could not afford the kick ass rear bumper that we now have (Thanks Jim!).

Yup, that lower part is like a tin can, no real structure to it. Besides, the latches would never take that load. I'm not even sure how you could mount it so the tire wouldn't hit the bumper when you drop the tailgate.

Why don't you put it on a side using the same carrier , like old land rovers's . I have a custom made tire carrier really cheap in my opinion if you have a rear bumper strong enough.

Post pics of the ensuing failure and destruction.

I would like to see a few pics of this.

Thanks.

well I use to carry my Hi-lift jack on the lower tailgate. what I did was it took a 4xRac and mounted that to the lower tailgate but since the tail gate is hollow I reinforced the inside with some metal tubing and when I tightened the bolts to hold the rac on the tail gate didn't buckle. now the jack was mounted horizonally and it was strong enough to where I could stand on the jack and place things on the roof. as long as the inners of the lower tailgate are reinforced that thing is sturdy. i'll keep ya'll posted on the project.
