60, but should be the same for a 62, right? Passenger side, on the bell housing below cylinder 6 (right above the starter motor)...

Have you checked to see if you can find the window on the 62? Sometimes there is a plate covering it (held down with a bolt)...just loosen the bolt and the plate flips up...

Looks like this is an old thread but I have a question. I went to get a smog check today and the tech could not find this cover so he didn't do the smog check. I looked myself and with the help of these pictures was able to find it. My cover is missing, is it important to have that window covered and if so where can I get a replacement cover for it. Going back next week to get the smog check done now that I know where the window is.

That cover is discontinued, should be easy to find a used one here on MUD.

I also had a smog shop decline to smog my '85 60 about six years ago...they said "the guy with the timing light isn't here". Now I go to a different shop.

I’ve had my 60 smogged probably 8 times in LA County and no one has every checked the timing. Go somewhere else.

have fun with that...

I am in Fullerton and own a 89 fj62. I recently passed smog testing at Santa Fe Motor Fuels located NW corner of Telegraph and Carmenita, Santa Fe Srings. I don’t recall seeing him checking my timing but he may have.

Awesome, I'll go there on my next day off. I am in Orange so I'm not too far away.

I have had my cruiser for over 10 years in CA and they have never asked about that window during smog. It is a PITA to see in there and set the timing with the light at the same time. Usually involves an awkward contortion of leaning over the running engine with the light while fiddling with the distributor. I leave my cover open all the time so it is probably not a big deal.

Not sure why the tech would even check it... the smog procedure just has them hookup a sensor to the coil to get RPM. Maybe the techs just click through but I have never had an issue.

One thing of note with smog - check the heat riser tube on the left side between the heat riser and the air cleaner. If that is buggered in any way, I have had them fail me for that.

Well not good. I took it to Santa Fe Motor Fuels and they failed me. Two reasons.. first, couldn't check timing, he wasn't even looking in the right place. He was looking at the front of the engine where the belts are. I showed him it is a window above the starter in the bell housing but it didn't matter because he also found two holes drilled in my exhaust pipe. I think the PO must have done that for some reason, they are directly across from the O2 sensors in the pipe. I have no idea why they are there, must be trying to trick the O2 sensor somehow? If I get those fixed he will recheck within 30 days no charge. The fact that he wasn't even looking in the right place for the timing makes me nervous to go back. California smog is a PITA.

Having just passed for the second time, may I say it isn't actually that hard, but you have to have all your ducks in a row and not go in blindly.

Yeah, it passed as far as the emissions test goes just failed the visual part due to the holes that the PO or someone before me drilled in the muffler pipe and the fact that he wrote "can't see timing marks" but he wasn't even looking in the right place.
