I have a mechanic at a Toyota dealership reccomending that I have my timing gears replaced before I hit 200,000 miles. He said that he sees a lot of cruisers breaking down at 200,000 miles due to this problem. Is this a comon problem of is he just trying to get me to drop $2300.00 needlessley?

Thanks
Jeff

There are no timing gears, (well there are "gears" that the chain operates from), but it is not gear driven, they are chain driven, I have never ever heard of "timing gears" breaking on an FZJ80 (your Land Cruiser). Do not spend $2300 on it.

SERIOUSLY time for a new mechanic.

If he wants to come here and try to defend himself, tell him to bring it on.

Nonsense. A complete sham. I wouldnt trust that machanic to air up my tires, let alone open my hood. Hes seen alot of cruisers break down at 200k? Thats really something as it seems there are reletivly few cruisers ( 1FZ-FEs at least ) cracking the 200k mark. Ask him to give you a copy of the quote and let us know the details. I suspect it will be good for a laugh.

Find a new mechanic my friend.

oh yeah, Welcome :flipoff2:

Actually, the 2F and 3F motors have timing gears. They don't wear out under normal operating conditions (oil in the motor), but they are there.

I have heard of one case of a chipped tooth on a 3FE motor, but they pretty much last forever.

The 1FZ-FE has a timing belt or chain (can't remember which). The replacement interval should be in your FSM.

200K miles is just starting to break in.

Thanks for the good info. I should be busting through 200,000 miles this week and she is still running strong.
