I have a 94 FJ80 with 260k on it and just broke a timing chain...trying to decide whether to try to snatch the old chain out and replace it....or remove head and do a valve job while I am at it...anyone out there that can give me some advice...been awhile since I have done any major motor projects and this could be challenging....

Then there is the option of a total engine swap with a remanufactured long block that I found at Spartan motors in Washington state.....being that this one has 260 thousand on it....

With that kind of mileage I would think about pulling the motor and freshening it up. Shoot me a PM or an email and I can get you a list of parts and prices.

Does $3300.00 sound weird for a remanyfactured long block with 3 year unlimited mileage warranty.....?

For $3000.00 I would seriously consider an LT1 or LS1 swap.

3 grand might buy you the adapter, misc hardware, and maybe some of the wiring.

I suppose if you steal the engine out of some wreck and run shoddy straight pipes out the front wheel well, you might get by for ~4 grand.

So, you're saying it's doable:flipoff2:

Come to find out .....after opening up the valve cover....chain is intact....maybe jumped a couple teeth on bottom sprocket.....lot of slack in chain....seems to be a non interference engine.....

might have been slide come apart and maybe jammed up chain

This was my first thought as well. The chains are not known to snap very often unless you have a stick and roll backwards while dropping the clutch in a forward gear.

If the chain is jammed at the top and loose at the bottom I'd open the front up for a closer look at the chain, slides and tension plunger. Than you'll know where to go from here.

With 260K and an intact chain, I would say it's a great time to pull the front cover and take a peak. Chances are you'll need to replace a few seals on the front cover anyway.
