I own a 96 L/C with 220K miles, and unfortunately NO maintenance records. I understand from the original owner that both the engine and transmission were rebuilt at 160K miles. I own a 97 Tacoma as well, and had to replace the timing chain at 150K. Is there a timing chain/belt on the 4.5L that needs replacing?

The L/C does have a timing chain that runs the twin cams off the crankshaft. It is adjusted by a hydraulic tensioner. Unless it breaks it does not need to be replaced.

#52 is the tensioner and it on the passenger's side of the block. No worries with the timing chain.

Old thread, but do these tensioners go bad generally? I have a 94 that is making a ticking noise that I cant tell where it is coming from, but it is coming from the front of the engine, it just reminds me of the noise that my 22RE made before the timing chain tensioner gave way, jumped timing, and bent valves...

Also is the 4.5 in the cruisers an interference engine?

Does the ticking noise get faster as you rev it? Check your alternator idler pulley. Remove it, if the noise goes away, the bearing is bad. Get a new pulley from Cdan.
